ahhhh, Breyer' Rocky Road, arguably one of my favorite ice creams of all time....
...until now!! oh am I ever unamused!! They have gone and ruined my favorite flavor! what we're they thinking! sure, its been awhile, but i never expected to be greeted by an overpowering cheap marshmallow flavor!
One of my very first posts was about how I adore their rocky road...and now this!! shame on you Breyers. Guess I'll only be eating haagen-daz rocky road from now on.
On Second Scoop: I'm still unamused...I remember the swirl being more mild and not so cheap tasting...maybe I've just been spoiled by the last year of reviewing. The base chocolate is still fine, and the almonds are sparse like they've always been (which is ok with me), but man...this swirl...
2012 Update: To add insult to injury, my favorite childhood ice cream has been demoted to a Frozen Dairy Dessert. What are you doing Breyers?

I dislike all rocky road ice cream, but the funny thing is Haagen-Dazs Rocky Road is my second favorite ice cream after Amazon Valley Chocolate. The marshmallow isn't fake tasting and has a smooth liquid consistency unlike other gross fake tasting rocky road ice creams. I have to say Haagen-Dazs is the best store bought ice cream and I also love Laloo's goats milk ice cream black mission fig.
ReplyDeleteAs someone that really likes rocky road, the three part triumvirate that makes it great is 1) great chocolate flavor; 2) great almonds; and 3) real marshmallows (not marshmallow cream.)
ReplyDeleteThe contrast in consistency between the spongey marshmallows, the crunchy nuts and the creamy ice cream, combined with the flavors of all is what makes rocky road fans happy.
In my book, Blue Bell is the best overall and only store bought ice cream worth eating. All the rest use that nasty, cheap marshmallow cream.
Baskin Robbins is also great - with a darker chocolate flavor than Blue Bell's.
Oh my God thank you. Anyone can stomach the marshmallow slime swirl is beyond me. Real marshmallows or no go. I'd rather stir paste into chocolate ice cream. OK. Maybe that's a little too far.
DeleteI don't like Breyers Rocky Road. I cannot remember what the best one was I used to get It may have been A&P that is no longer in business.
DeleteI bought some of this today and although I love or thought I loved Rocky Road Ice Cream, if this was the first Rocky Road I had ever tasted I would not be a fan. I think it had chocolate covered peanuts in it. The round nuts tasted and looked like peanuts. They definitely weren't almonds. I will probably throw it out or at minimum pick out the chocolate things and throw them out. Not good at all. Four dollars down the drain.
ReplyDeleteI agree.
ReplyDeleteNormally, I'm a huge fan of Breyers ice cream, and especially their Natural Vanilla, Cookie Dough, and brownie flavors, which beat their competition for comparable flavors.
So you can imagine my disappointment when I got some Rocky Road the other day (traditionally one of my favorite flavors), and inside, I found... chocolate ice cream with marshmallow swirls.
Umm... there's a little more to Rocky Road than that. I'm pretty sure that Rocky Road is supposed to have some nuts in it. And, optionally, chocolate swirls and/or chocolate chips. But definitely nuts. Which were most definitely NOT in there, unless they somehow all wound up at the bottom of the carton (I've now had the whole top half of the carton, and have yet to see signs of a single nut).
Hi, I am just finding this blog and post now and I sit and devour rocky road ice cream...i had to know other people's feelings on different brands! I remember Breyers Rocky Road...it's been years since I had it, but reading that they changed the marshmallow - I will not even consider buying it!
ReplyDeleteThe other day I was at Whole Foods and saw they had the beloved rocky road - I had to have it...It's perfect! Nutty, creamy from the smooth marshmallow and sweet enough chocolate to not be considered overpowering..The almonds are roasted and small which I think helps add to the bite of the ice cream..Glad I found this site and hope you guys get a chance to try the Whole Foods brand R.R. would love to know your thoughts!
I'll keep an eye out for it!
ReplyDeleteThe chocolate flavor is weak, the marshmallows are fake and the almonds are too sparse. Any more corners to cut guys? No? It's a circle already? That's what I figured. Man, I hope Baskin Robbins doesn't suck now too.
ReplyDeleteRocky Road is one of my favorite ice cream. Do not buy this one, it isn't bad but it isn't rocky road. Marshmallow swirl which doesn't taste like anything and instead of almonds they have chocolate covered peanuts which are pretty good but like I said.. this isn't rocky road. The chocolate flavor is weak and just doesn't have that creamy chocolatey rocky road taste. Very disappointed.
ReplyDeleteI've been craving rocky road Haagen Daaz! Debated between breyer's and edy's. Got the Breyer's and was so disappointed. The marshmallow was barely there and the chocolate was weak. Needed to read other comments to affirm that I wasn't making anything up.
ReplyDeleteJust got Breyers Rocky Road and this stuff is gross. Not Rocky Road at all. Get a clue Breyers your Rocky Road sucks!
ReplyDeleteHaagen Daaz is the best! I tried Dreyer's. It wasn't very good. I just bought Breyer's and it is way worse than Dreyer's. I will stick with Haagen Daaz.
ReplyDeleteThe marshmallows texture was always my favorite part and i am strongly disappointed.
ReplyDeleteBreyers Rocky Road ice cream is the only Rocky Road ice cream I will eat. Why you ask. Because it has MARSHMELLOW CREAM. I am sorry you want tiny icky marshmellows in your ice cream. I do not. I love this one and only this one.
ReplyDeleteIt's a disservice to real Rocky Road. You don't actually like RR and that's ok. Kroger has a great chocolate marshmallow frozen dairy dessert you should try.
DeleteBryers is the best Rocky Road no doubt, the marshmellow cream is the way to go! If you want real marshmellows they sell them by the bag for $1.25. Pour them on and eat yourself sick.
ReplyDeleteIt’s not real Rocky Road if it’s made with marshmallow swirl. If you like it, fine. But don’t call it Rocky Road.
DeleteDidn't the almonds use to be covered in marshmellow and chocolate? I strongly remember so.
ReplyDeletelooking at the current iteration of this one, they did remove the chocolate coating from the almonds. is that what you mean?
ReplyDeletejust remember, that's your opinion.... and many, many scoop shops would disagree with you.
