Reese Peanut Butter Ice Cream Cup Review

[New for 2011] What a wonderful Friday yesterday. I don't think it's been that warm since maybe a fluke day in November or maybe even October. How can you not think about ice cream on such a gorgeous day? I would have loved to sit outside with a fresh scoop of ice cream, but most local shops around here aren't open til April 1st. Hmmm, Dairy Queen would suffice... or maybe, just maybe....

Oh yeah!!! I think it's time to try the new Reese's Peanut Butter Ice Cream Cup. It's not just any wonderful peanut butter and chocolate ice cream, no no, this is branded by Reese's (made by Good Humor). I can't wait to dive into peanut butter ice cream with a Reese's peanut butter swirl dipped in a milk chocolate flavored coating.

oh, the non-descript suspense!

Nice! I love the peanut butter cup inspired design. Admit it, it just looks fun.

Mmmmmm, my first bite!

Mmmm mmm mmmm, I do love chocolate and peanut butter. I think they've really tried to aim for that familiar pb to chocolate ratio that we are use to. More importantly, they've tried to recreate that gritty, tangy nature that only Reese's delivers. I take a few more bites and I discover we might have a small problem. I just got a bite that came across as a bit too salty. That was weird. I continue on and I think if you get a bit too much swirl, it's almost a bit too much Reese-ness. It's weird because I've eaten way too many reese's pb cups in my lifetime, so I'm not sure why this is bothering me. I can only surmise that maybe the swirl is very salty knowing it would be mixed with ice cream and coating, but that every now and then you get just a smidge too much swirl.

They've done a nice job on the tasty milk chocolate shell. It appears to be a bit more milky than what you would find on a typical peanut butter cup, though that makes sense from a production standpoint. The only minor complaint here is that it's cracking up a bit more than I had hoped. I managed to spill on myself three times. Luckily I was still parked in the Shaw's parking lot and not driving down the road, otherwise I would have been a mess by the time I got back to work.

All that being said, I totally wanted another one when I was down. Sure, that mild saltiness remains, but that's all the more reason to try again to see if it's the same... but I didn't, I was good. Overall this treat still comes together nicely. The shell is good, the base ice cream is good, and the chocolate to ice cream ratio is good. I'm going to have to say you need to try these at least once and make up your own mind. Maybe the saltiness will bug you, maybe you won't even notice.

On Second Scoop: First off, let me point that out that I do like these. I just enjoyed my second one and it went down real easy. If I think about it, the overall experience is reminscent of a eating a Snickers ice cream bar, in particular the chocolate shells seem to be similar as is the overall feel of the ice cream inside. (Hmmm, now I'm tempted to do a side by side comparison) Now to my salty comment. Well, I still kind of stand by it, but only because I can't think of a better word for what I am experiencing. You know how a Reese's would taste without it's chocolate shell, well, that's what I'm trying to describe. It wouldn't really matter as much if it was lingering. Ok, go try these and let me know what you think.

On Third Scoop: Never give up, never surrender! Keep on truckin'! Ok, I'm sitting here comtemplating my third experience. I realize salt is probably the wrong word, and it was pretty subtle during the eating, but yet again there is this strange aftertaste. Maybe they mixed in a bit of peanut shell and that's what I taste hehehehe. Iunno, you'll have to make up your own mind on the Unilever treat.

On Fourth Scoop: well, fifth actually, but anyway. I had the last one today and it hit the spot. Granted, I was dieing for a peanut butter based milkshake, but none the less, it hit the spot. Look, you wont regret trying these, plain and simple. So go get a box!

Verdict?  Try them!
Buy Again?  Yup

  1. we tried some of these today also.
I didn't find the one I tried to be overly salty. It was pretty good. Fairly evenly flavoured.

I got them more for my husband, but decided to try one.
    He loved it.

  6. I don't have the box with me at the moment, but I will update tomorrow. It was like 29% total fat, 50% sat fat, maybe 260-290 calories.

  7. Hey Dubba, I apologize about the "stupid" question about who makes the product, but I looked on the Reese's website and it wasn't there. Can you tell me what store you purchased it at? Thanks for the great blog!

  8. they tend to be real subtle on the rebranding, so it's hard to tell unless you can decipher plant codes. the same goes for the snickers and m&m ice creams. I'll look closer on the box tomorrow.

  9. they are made by unilever.
i have tried some and i thought they were really good- about as close to the real thing as you can get in ice cream form! i didn't notice the lingering salty taste?

  10. This is the most amazing treat...found at my local walmart!! I think that the ice cream snack really delivers on the Reese peanut butter cup essence! it was the perfect balance of the Reese salty, grainy, sweet, peanut butter reese's has built there brand on in a frozen refreshing ice cream! my new favorite indulgence!

  11. @mel: too funny, i just added to the post that they are made by unilever and then I saw your comment.

I'm not going to argue that alot of people are going to love these, it's just that something about them is bugging me (I know, I'm probably being too picky)

  15. Stumbled on these at my local Walgreen's. Had to pick them up, and I wasn't sorry! I didn't experience the salty taste mentioned in the review. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of peanut butter that comprises the swirl that radiates out from the center of this well-made treat. The peanut butter is not smooth, but has that gritty Reeces texture that we all know, and what has made the regular PB Cups a mainstay American candy. The ice cream was rich, and all was well-complemented by the milk chocolate shell. If you find it, try it - you won't be disappointed!

  16. I found that my ice cream "cup" was not that Peanut Buttery.... I was a little disappointed in the fact that the PB was not the strong "punch in the face" I normally get with a Reeses. Overall, it was good. Just looking for a little more flavor. The ice cream was smooth and I thought the overall size of the "cup" was good. Not to much, not to little.
    :)

  18. It was deliciously scrumptious!! FIrst of all its not a peanut butter cup, its a peanut butter Ice cream cup. Thought I would put that since there seem to be comments on it not tasting like the original, duh, its ice cream.

  19. @Your_Mom: Thank you captain obvious. This whole time I thought some idiot had put accidentally put regular Reese's into the freezer and that made it taste funny.

@Everyone_else: glad everyone is enjoying these, I need to pick up a fresh box one of these days.

  21. I've seen these around and even though Reese's is my favorite candy, it wasn't until I read your review that I actually bought a box! It's because I love peanut butter and Reese's cups but hate the dull, vague monotone flavor that peanut butter-flavored things (like peanut butter cookies or peanut butter ice cream) have, so I avoid most peanut butter-flavored things. But reading about the gritty Reese's filling and the saltiness in your review gave me hope that this really did seek to replicate the Reese's flavors without just throwing in some vaguely peanut butter-flavored ice cream and calling it a day.

So last night I tried one and I love them! The peanut butter swirl is genius. I have to add that the chocolate shell seems far thicker than the one on Snicker's ice cream bars, which I think adds to the quality of these Reese's bars.

Thanks for inspiring me to go out and try them for myself!

  23. Just tried these and definitely noticed the saltiness you described! At first I thought it was just me but after reading this review im glad to know im not alone!

  24. I had high expectations for this treat because I had read a lot of positive reviews since this has been on the market. However, I was disappointed because the chocolate shell took center stage. The ice cream filling was good but I wanted more of it since peanut butter ice cream is my favorite ice cream flavor, since this is an ice cream novelty, and since it is my favorite part of the Reese's cup. I'd rather have a Reese's Cup, B&J's Peanut Butter Cup ice cream, or Breyer's Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Blasts to satisfy my peanut butter craving.

  25. These are disgusting! I just taste poor quality chocolate coating and poor quality toffee tasking ice cream. Nothing like a Reese's peanut butter cup! How can they screw this up...first off they don't even put in real Reese's peanut butter chunks, which if you just do that with good quality ice cream taste amazing! This is Rubbish!!

    1. for context: you had the newer frozen dairy dessert version while this review was for the original ice cream based version.
