Ok, story time, let's see how it goes. If you look at the blog, it looks a lot like I've been doing nothing but eating super high fat content treats for awhile now, and this is partially true, but what you don't see is what I eat on my downtime. While certain days I may enjoy Magnum or Ben & Jerry's, there are plenty of days when I was making myself a humble caramel milkshake with Breyers Dulce de Leche (
the one from Easter). I was enjoying the clean simplicity of my shakes so much that when I went to the grocery store on Tuesday, I actually bought...
Vanilla ice cream! That's right, me, the guy who eats way too many mix-ins actually bought a plain, low-fat vanilla ice cream. Something in my brain made me think I needed to cleanse my palette. In my brain's defense, it has been almost two years since
I reviewed plain vanilla ice cream. Now I've had pretty good luck with low fat Turkey Hill in the past, so why not try it again?
Nothing fancy, just vanilla bean, you know, the kind you can actually see (had I not used my cell phone camera anyway). Nothing but low fat sustenance here. Good news is that I don't really have any complaints after having a few bowls of this. It's not chewy, there's no funny aftertastes, it's just simple churned ice cream. Sure, it doesn't have the weight of a premium ice cream, but if you need something plain and simple, this is more than sufficient.
Wait, my story isn't done. So I bought this flavor inspired by my caramel shakes which means that at some point I had to make this a shake. I did just that last night and man was it.... boring! Sorry, I haven't had a plain vanilla shake in... well, I have them on occasion from Arby's, but that's not a true ice cream shake. Maybe the base wasn't strong enough, or maybe I put in too much milk, but I got desperate enough to start throwing vanilla extract into my shake. I don't know if you are suppose to do that, but it didn't actually help that much, so no biggie I guess.
Verdict? more than sufficient
Buy again? probably not, I need my mix-ins!

I like adding my own mix-ins. If you want to keep it healthy, try pretzels, almonds, vanilla wafers, some natural PB, and reduced fat oreos. I actually like to do that for plain, natural (regular fat) ice creams, just with keeping the portions in check. I tend to also drizzle olive oil on plain vanilla ice cream. Just because I can and it helps me to focus on the ice cream itself.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVE Turkey Hill's light ice creams! I have Moose Tracks, Strawberry cheesecake, Coconut almond fudge, Snyder pretzel, and cookie dough in the freezer right now! I've seen vanilla bean but ehh too boring for me.. Gotta have my mix ins.. I wish they had a light peanut buttery flavor..
ReplyDeleteI do not like this light recipe for the simple reason that it leaves an aftertaste and the vanilla flavor is almost entirely lacking. It looks fine, but the gummy fluffiness is disappointing.
ReplyDeleteMeh, tastes artificial to me. Now the Moose Tracks Light Recipe IS the best. Twice the calories, but ten times better tasting.
