One of the neatest looking new 2012 products has to be the York Peppermint Patty Ice Cream bar. A York is a straight forward (and tasty) treat that should translate well to ice cream... ok, no suspense today. This treat does translate pretty well, but let's dig into why this is a good treat and not a great treat.
I'm sure you are noticing what I did. The ice cream's chocolate isn't as dark and doesn't have that cool trademark ripples of the original despite the fact that the box implies it will have them. (I don't like false advertising, it's not nice!). I took a big whiff but that wonderful York smell isn't really present either.
Ok, let's recap. One, it needs a better wrapper. Two, the shell could be thicker and darker, and in a perfect world, I'd love it to be a little softer just like the original. Three, the ice cream is perhaps a smidge mild, but I don't want to complain too loudy because it's better than being overpower. You know, I rarely ever crave a York peppermint patty, but when I do have one, it always hits the spot. It's just a straight forward and consistent treat. I think it's the peppermint filling's texture that sells it for me. If they could some how add a bit of grit to the ice cream's texture, this thing would be perfect in my mind.
So there you have it. A nice minty treat that should sell well. Nice job Good Humor.
On Second Scoop: This really is a nice homage to York Peppermint Patties. I just had one and I'm totally in the York zone... in winter. There's that familiar York tingle, the dark chocolate balance, it's all here, it's just in a chilly place. This may not have been clear before but I really do like this treat. I know I nitpicked a little, but it's only because I have a lot of respect for the original. Try these out.
Verdict? A nice addition to the freezer aisle

I just saw these yesterday and got kind of excited. I remember Klondike had some York branded bars out a few years ago and I loved them. I was hoping these would be like a round Klondike.
ReplyDeleteyeah, I remember those now that you mention it, but I never tried one. Definitely give these a try.
DeleteYork Ice Cream bars are the best ever. The Chocolate covering was super and the Ice Cream was wonderful. Hope you make other yummy things.

This comes from an ice cream geek.
Delectable!
ReplyDeleteI loved these. So yummy. Then again I enjoy most mint ice cream so that's to be expected. As I've mentioned before, mint ice cream is my OTP!
ReplyDeleteI especially enjoyed the crunchy chocolate shell. Yum!
Yes they were super yummy and at first I though a thicker chocolate covering would make it better but the more i ate itthe more perfect it became
ReplyDeleteI absolutely loved these ice cream bars. I've been looking for them but I can't seem to find them anymore in any of the local grocery stores where I live. Did they discontinue the ice cream bars?
ReplyDeleteUh oh, they arent on the website anymore. I just assumed that they were still there, but now that I think about it, i think I only see the thin mint version now, they are similar but not as good http://www.onsecondscoop.com/2015/04/girl-scouts-thin-mints-ice-cream-bars.html
