[By Nick, discontinued before 2014] Hello everyone, my name is Nick and I’ll save you my life story. Since Dubba is all incognito I guess I shall be as well. Let’s just say I hail from Upstate New York and I’m in the 18-30 range. Now what qualifies me to have a guest review on this glorious blog? Absolutely nothing. I’m just a guy with a passion for frozen desserts and the writing competency of an 8th grader. So please forgive me in advance for any terrible grammatical errors and things of the like. Now let’s get back to my earlier statement about my love for frozen desserts. Unlike Dubba who tends to prefer his premium ice cream, I tend to enjoy various frozen ice cream-like substances. From almond ice cream to frozen kefir, if it’s frozen I’ll more than likely to like it* which leads us to today’s review of Laloo's Black Mission Fig Goat Milk Ice Cream.
*Disclaimer: If it involves coconut I will not even consider touching it. That stuff is beyond vile.
LaLoo's Black Mission Fig Goat's Milk Ice Cream
Okay enough with the drawn out prelude, let’s get to the actual product. First off, whoever designed this pint deserves a raise. This has to be one of the most visually appealing pints I have ever seen.
Opening the container though, you’re greeted by a not so appealing beige base sprinkled with little pieces of figs. I was expecting some sort of smell to come off from the ice cream but it was pretty neutral. Digging in, I was surprised at how tame the goat’s milk was. I was bracing myself for a kick in the face from some gamey flavor but instead was greeted with a sweet hybrid of both peach and strawberry with a slight tang on the end. The figs are clearly the star here and I’m content with that.
The ice cream is extremely creamy yet leans towards the chewiness of say a container of Edy’s. Despite their size, the little bits of figs dispersed throughout the pint add a whole other dimension to the complexity of this pint. If this had just been a completely blended pint I might have gotten bored with it but the figs brought with them an added texture bringing this ice cream onto my list of favorites. I’m not even ashamed to say that I pretty much devoured the whole pint in one sitting.
I know I did a terrible job at explaining how truly unique this product is but that’s the problem right there. It’s just way too unique for its own good. Would I compare it to a fig newton? Eh, not even close. I’d say it was more along the lines of a roasted fig and goat cheese plate. I’m mostly surprised that had I not have known it was made with goat’s milk I would’ve just thought I was eating a dense frozen dairy dessert. I believe ice cream companies need to start embracing the humble fig. Yeah Ben & Jerry’s, I’m looking at you. You could even name it “Figging Around”. That’s right up your ally.
Verdict? Unique but in a good way
Buy Again? If I could find it in a store around me I wouldn’t think twice about it
Dubba's Note: Big Thanks to Nick for his excellent first blog post ever!
Welcome to Nick and a good job indeed on your first guest post!
ReplyDeleteI would have been apprehensive to try something with goats milk but this looks good.
Also, glad to know I'm not the only one who devours an entire pint in one sitting. I am so jealous of Dubba that he can eat one scoop at a time!!
Thank you very much. I was pretty apprehensive to try the pint to be honest. I'm pretty open minded and willing to try anything at least once. I believe Dubba's willpower has come with years of experience. I'm pretty sure he's consumed his fair share of pints in one sitting as well though;]
ReplyDeleteha, indeed! Those early pints didn't stand a chance against my appetite.
DeleteGlad to see you reviewing, Nick! When it comes to ice cream, you're one of the very few who's thoughts I care to read.
ReplyDeleteStrawberry darling laloos is still on of my favorites and I've been dying to find this one.
but really, no coconut? Have you at least tried turtle mountain cookie dough? so, so good
Thanks Roddy, that means a lot coming from you. I want to find the strawberry darling flavor as well. When I saw it wasn't on ice cream source, I was a little disappointed. I've tried some of turtle mountain's novelties that use coconut milk and just couldn't get over the flavor. Coconut is one of the only flavors I cannot tolerate well. To each their own though.
DeleteDon't sell yourself short Nick. I teach 8th graders, and you sir, are no eighth grader. I look forward to more.
ReplyDeleteThanks Steve, I guess I'm just a tough critic of myself.
