Stewart's Black Cherry Frozen Float Review

[New for 2012] Oh man, yet again I find myself at another grocery store that is carrying the new chocolate choco tacos but not the peanut butter choco tacos. Why must the stores taunt me like this?! Uggg, well I guess I could go somewhere else but... wait, there's a brightly colored container catching my eye.

Is that Stewart's Floats in a Pint??? hahaha, oh man! Those appeared out of the blue! Oh, and they're on sale too! It would be wrong to pass it up at just $2.99 per real pint.

I always see Stewart's Fountain Classics at the stores. They are hard to miss since those bright orange packs of root beer always catch my eye. I don't really buy much soda anymore but I'm pretty sure I've had their root beer at least a few times.

You may remember that i'm not a fan of root beer float flavored products, but that said, there is something about these that caught my eye. Well, I already said it caught my eye, but then it went ahead and got my full attention. I think it was the fact there are a few flavors to choose from. We have all seen root beer tried by several companies, but black cherry? or vanilla cream? Throw in the sale price with the word black cherry and I can't resist. I think we've got to try this right now! (Plus it saves me from looking for those silly tacos)

Ha, well that's not what I was expecting. I'm so use to float flavors coming in a swirl that I wasn't expecting a uniform product.... Ok, I'm scooping.... nice, it's a uniform taste too. That certainly simplifies things. I was wondering how fancy this would be, but they are going straight for consistent flavor, no decorative foolishness here.

I take some more bites and I'm not sure what to think. It definitely has some cherry taste to it. Not a tang or bite mind you, but more of a milder cherry that you might find in a cola product.

It's icy, but not as icy as an Italian ice. It's also somewhat creamy, but not so much as ice cream. It's more of a funky sherbet I guess, but even that doesn't seem like the right term to use. I should mention the fat is clocking in at just 2 grams, 1 of them saturated. Mix that with just a 100 calories a serving and what do we have to lose? Even if it's only half tasty, it's also only half the calories.

I don't usually like these types of products but... Iunno, these first few scoops have me interested. There definitely seems to be some kind of mild carbonated bump to this treat. It could just be my mind playing with me, but after the burp, I'm think there might be actual carbonation going on here.

You know, I have an idea. I don't usually take the time to do this, but what if I let it melt for 10 minutes? Would it become more like a real float? Maybe leave it in the fridge for 20-30 minutes? Hmmmmm.... no time for that, what if I melt some under hot water... ok, that worked well enough. I'm getting a soft serve mixed with ICEE vibe. It doesn't have quite the same spark as an ICEE float, but it's got just enough gumption to hold my attention.

I can't say I would rush out for this one or pay full price (potentially $4.69), but I wouldn't be afraid to try it either. It's different and you can always share it if you don't like it.

On Second Scoop: This isn't the kind of pint you are going to blow through... no, correct that, you could if you wanted to since it's very light, but I don't think you'll need to. This is a small bite treat where you slowly enjoy the flavor for a bit and then move on. I wouldn't want giant scoops of this stuff, it would be too weird (in my book), you definitely want to take your time here. But it's different, it's effectively healthy, and I'm ok with that.

Verdict?  Different and not bad
Buy this brand again?  I am tempted to sample the other flavors (if on sale)

  1. I bought this at the Dollar Store for $1. I want my dollar back. I had the orange flavor...it tastes worse than watered down ice cream...

  2. Just got Vanilla Cream from the Dollar Tree. The after taste makes me think I accidentlly licked lotion off my mouth.
