Graeter's Vanilla Ice Cream Review

If you talk to a Ben & Jerry's fan, you might hear "I love Cherry Garcia" or "I love Chunkey Monkey!" Talk to a fan of Haagen-Dazs and you'll probably hear "I love the quality of Haagen-Dazs". All of these things are compliments of course, but talk to a fan of Graeter's and the response is always the same "This is the best ice cream on the planet". I've never seen anyone be rude about it, but people who grew up on Graeter's have set this stuff as the gold standard by which all others will strive to reach but never quite do.

With such an established image, I was kind of shocked when I didn't fall instantly in love with Black Raspberry Chip or Chocolate Chocolate Chip. I never questioned the quality of the product, that would be silly, but I wasn't magically transported to another plain of existence.... until now.

This is Graeter's Vanilla Ice Cream. That's right, just vanilla. A simple, unassuming, white-highlighted package with a little picture of vanilla beans on it. You see, I really wanted to give Graeter's one more chance, but I didn't want those pesky huge chunks of chocolate to get in the way again. Since there are only a half dozen flavors available here in central mass, my only non-chip choice was Vanilla.

Trying out the Aardvark Multi-purpose Strainer

A few weeks ago I got an email from the fine folks of Float Pro LLC. They are the people behind the new Aardvark Multi-purpose Strainer. As an ice cream guru, they asked if I would be interested in trying a free Aardvark since it's original purpose was as a Root Beer Float maker (usually price is just $9.99 plus S&H). I haven't had a float in awhile, so I was more than happy to give the Aardvark a try.

Here is the Aardvark Multi-Purpose Strainer.
Hmmm, it's thinner then I expected.
It's also kinda cute with those little ear handles.

Turkey Hill Salty Caramel Ice Cream
(side note: don't freeze Rolo Minis)

Oh man, call this a long lost review. It's just that sometimes when you have a product and it doesnt hit the mark, you lose interest. And then you try to spice things up on the second scoop and still you wind up checking the tivo rather than blogging about it. Hey, it happens.

Breyers BLASTS! Golden Oreo FDD Review

[New for 2012] There are a ton of great looking new products out this year, but I think one that seems to catch everyone's eye is the new Breyer's BLASTS! Golden Oreo frozen dairy dessert. I adore cookies and cream, it's one of my favorite flavors and it's usually hard to mess up. That said, besides mint cookies & cream, there aren't a lot of crazy variations on this tried and true flavor.

Hey, even I'm pretty excited about this one despite it being a frozen dairy dessert. It's Golden Oreo Cookie Pieces and swirls of Golden Vanilla and Sweet Cream flavored frozen dairy dessert. The bright yellow packaging makes me fear that this one will be too sweet, and yet I feel I need to try this one right now!

On Location at Friendly's
Trying the Reese’s Pieces Explosion Waffle Sundae

Discontinued (less peanut buttery alternatives still available)

Oh my poor daughter. A week's worth of April vacation and she didn't get to go anywhere. Literally the only time we went out was to her orthodontist appointment on Monday and I couldn't even buy her lunch afterward because I left my wallet at home. After that my wife and I got sick and the week was pretty much ruined.

So, on this the last day of vacation, I decided to take her out while my wife and son rested. I wasn't exactly sure where to go, but then the idea of Friendly's hit me. Now I just needed to find one that hasn't been permanently closed...

We find an open Friendly's and are quickly seated. We're both hungry and make short work of the dessert menu. My daughter wisely chooses the Oreo Sundae. It was only like $2.19 but it looked great and she finished every bite. As for me? Well, I need to try something new on the menu.

My friends, there are five new waffle dessert on the menu: Nutty Caramel Waffle Sundae, Chocolate Supreme Waffle Sundae, Reese’s Pieces Explosion Waffle Sundae and Strawberry Cheesecake Waffle Sundae. Their is a fifth option and it's a "Build-Your-Own" variety. The funny thing is that it's now called a Waffle Sandwich, not a sundae.(Actually the funny part is that we just saw the Food Truck episode of Man v Food Nation and they covered a waffle truck where people often fold up their waffles to make a sandwich).

It took all of 7 seconds to pick which one I wanted.

Ok, ready to get hungry?

Reese’s® Pieces® Explosion Waffle Sundae
2 scoops of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup ice cream
on a golden, crisp Belgian waffle,
covered with peanut butter topping, Reese’s Pieces,
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and whipped topping. ($4.99)

Rise and Shine with Cinnamon Crescent Rolls

I really wanted to make cinnamon rolls this morning, but it's hard to find allergy friendly ones. So, with a quick pinterest search I confirmed my suspicion that I could transform crescent rolls into cinnamon rolls. Mmmm, very cool, and my kids can help to boot.

Using the hungry house wife recipe post as my basic template, we set fourth on mixing up some cinnamon butter spread with Earth Balance natural buttery spread, brown sugar, and cinnamon. I was surprised THHW didn't go with brown sugar, but we certainly did!

Quick Tip: Make the butter THEN lay out the crescent rolls

That should be fun to clean

time to make the topping mix with confectioner's sugar, more butter, and vanilla extract
My drizzling needs some work
but oh man were these tasty!

Have a good day everyone!

Ciao Bella Raspberry Adonia
A Greek Frozen Yogurt Review

[Ciao Bella has completed rebranded/reformulated for 2014, adonia didn't make the cut]

Can you not be bothered to stir your "fruit on the bottom" yogurt? Instead, do you love Yoplait yogurt like I do? Have you ever taken that tasty Raspberry Yoplait and shoved it in the freezer to see what happens? Well, I haven't, but if I did, I'm pretty sure it would taste almost identical to Adonia.

Blue Bunny Cadbury Double Chocolate Bars

[New for 2012, discontinued] Hey, just because I'm rockin' my son's cold and my wife's fever and muscle aches doesn't mean I don't have time to stop and enjoy a nice ice cream bar... or two.... and then maybe one for breakfast the next day. Yeah, that's right, these little guys are good. Hey, I told you Blue Bunny knows how to rock the freezer treats and these Cadbury bars prove it yet again.

There are 4 varieties of the new Cadbury Blue Bunny Bars,  each coming in boxes of 8 bars, each being a 2 fluid ounce serving. Being a chocoholic, I couldn't help but grab DOUBLE CHOCOLATE. It's creamy Blue Bunny reduced fat chocolate ice cream dipped in thick, rich Cadbury milk chocolaty coating.

Breyers BLASTS! Klondike Krunch FDD Review

[New for 2012, didn't last long] With the arrival of the new 2012 Breyers Blasts flavors, I will admit I am a little apprehensive. On one hand, Breyers really seems to be trying to branch out and create some provocative new flavors. On the other hand, I really miss the days when Breyers stuck to making awesome all natural ice cream --- actually, to recap, let me state that Breyers newly redesigned website is claiming Banana Split and S'mores are new for 2012 (even though we saw them last year). It also looks like Double Chocolate Milkshake and Tin Roof Sundae have bit the dust (neither of which I bothered to try, oh well!).

Now this one is definitely new for 2012. It's Klondike Krunch which is Klondike Flavored Chocolatey Crackle Swirl with Chocolatey Covered Rice Crisps in Vanilla Frozen Dairy Dessert (with other natural flavors). My word, I think I just got carpel tunnel typing that one. This one clocks in at 1.5 quarts and as you may have noticed from the picture, the new container seems to be taller and thinner.

Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia
An Ice Cream Re-review

One of the very first reviews on this blogs was for Cherry Garcia. Not only is it Ben & Jerry's top selling flavor (for some unknown reason), but it's my wife's favorite flavor as well. This one obviously holds a special place in a lot of peoples' hearts, so let's take a closer look at it.

Skinny Cow Double Chocolate Crumble Shake-Stir
A Slimited Edition Frozen Drink Review

[For 2012 only] Let's start this review off honestly - Look, we all know I don't like skinny cow. Besides mini fudge pops, I pretty much despise all of their products. I know alot of you like them but it is what it is. I'm spoiled, I accept that, but when I saw these in the store, I still couldn't help but want to try them.

Behold, one of Skinny Cow's new Slimited Edition products. On one hand, slimited is a catchy term. On the other hand, I hate made up words.... geez, am I cranky today or something? Anyway, this is the new Slimited Edition Skinny Cow Double Chocolate Crumble Shake-Stirs. Yeah, another made up word. Shake-stir? Pretty sure James Bond would have a problem with that term (I'd make a bi-polar joke, but those are never funny).

Archer Farms Amaretto Cherry Gelato Review

2014 Note: Target changed gelato suppliers at the beginning of the year. Instead of "imported from Italy", it now says it's "Italian-style frozen dessert" and it's made in the U.S.

While popping up in other parts of the country last year (apparently), I've finally seen Archer Farms gelato pop up at several Targets in my area. Gelato has come to earn my respect over these past few years, so it seems only fitting to get these guys up on the blog.

This is Archer Farms Amaretto Cherry Gelato - imported from Italy (funny, I've seen that statement before on other store brand gelatos). I always forget what Amaretto means..... "Amaretto is a sweet, almond-flavoured, Italian liqueur" (from Wikipedia). Well, that explains why there is almond paste in this one. It was $4.99 for a small 30 fl oz container, but the look of it (and it's gelato brothers) keeps catching my eye... wait, you don't think it's that catchy?

On Location on Newbury Street in Boston
Part 2 of 2 : Visiting Ben & Jerry's Boston

Did you read Part 1 of our Newbury St adventure? Ok then, time for part 2.

Fellow ice cream fan Nick brought up ice cream for breakfast last week when Junk Food Guy pointed out a most excellent sounding test batch that just arrived at Ben & Jerry's Boston (174 Newbury St). Sure my wife and I have our SWEET cupcakes in hand, but those can wait until we get home, it's time for ice cream!

Not the best shot, but you get the idea that Ben & Jerry have gone Greek with their printed flags, laurel head wreaths, and what I can only assume are the hippie version of curtains togas. There's also stickers on the windows describing the new greek froyo flavors.

On Location on Newbury Street in Boston
Part 1 of 2 : Visiting SWEET

Ahhhhh, good ol' Newbury Street. For all our non-Bostonian friends out there, Newbury Street is kind of like.... ummm.... well, it's kind of like Newbury Street actually, I can't really think of any other street like it, though in my non-descript defense, it's not like I've been to a ton of other cities.

How can I describe it? It's just an awesome street lined with awesome shops. It's the old school Bostonian version of a street that probably exists in every great city, though we've been around awhile so we do it a little different. Where as a typical main street would have street level stores, Newbury goes with the split level approach. Alot of the time you can either go down a half flight of stairs to the basement store or take a half flight up to the first floor store. It's just a cool way to fit everything together.

So, Newbury St is blocks and blocks of stores and food. Clothing stores, knick knack stores, all kinds of neat restaurants (many of them open air), just all kinds of great stuff. On one end is the intersection with Mass Ave where a Tower Records once stood. 8 blocks to the east and you'll be in the Public Garden (with our infamous swan boats). If you are ever in the city, I recommend it as a nice walk... just do me a favor and try not to get run over.

Our day wasn't going quite as planned (i.e. total messed up), so my wife throws out that she's heard that SWEET has some of the best cupcakes in the city. That's a pretty bold statement and demands some investigating.

We leave the Pru and head on over towards Newbury Street. It doesn't take us long to find our neat looking goal. We enter a small shop that is mostly white, a few small tables, a big TV on the wall, and most importantly : A display case full of some very tasty looking cupcakes.

Like many of the customers there, we have no idea what to get. Thankfully, the staff was all smiles and patience. We took our time and eventually wound up going with a four pack to take with us - it's like $3.25 a cupcake or 4 for $12.50 (I think). You can also do a half dozen or dozen if you want.

Mmmmmm, a simple box with a complimentary bow, I like it.

I bet two things strike you right off the bat. One, it's a average size cupcake, just like the ones you make at home. Two, It's a dollup of whipcream, and not a covering like you might find somewhere else. I think you still get the same overall volume of frosting, so it's more of just a styling preference.

Now these first two you see were my choices, though the idea here is to split them with my wife. On the right we have a CHOCOLATE COVERED PRETZEL cupcake. It's a chocolate cupcake, chocolate buttercream frosting, and then some smashed pretzel rods for decoration. The cupcake is fairly typical, the frosting is this superb light and fluffy, super sugary conconction, and then the pretzels don't add as much as I had hoped. I adore pretzels, so I would have dug some more crunch in every bite (maybe some smaller crumbs mixed in with the big ones).

On the left we have the NOT SO ROCKY ROAD cupcake... oh wait, I forgot to tell you, SWEET is nut-free! That's were the "not so" comes from. So our little a-typical rocky road cupcake is actually chocolate brownie stuffed with homemade marshmallow, topped with whip cream and drizzled with chocolate. I really wanted to love this one since the frosting is light and excellent again (though I swear their is a hint of coconut). The marshmallow inside is a cool touch, but it was pretty liquidy. The big problem came with the chocolate brownie cupcake which was crazy dry. The frosting and marshmallow try to offset it, but it was just too much for me. (maybe we got a dry batch, who knows)

Now we couldn't go home without something for my daughter. They had a whole bunch of cute Easter themed cupcakes, but the funnest looking one is by far the PEEPS cupcake. It's a vanilla cupcake with two different buttercream frostings and then a peep on top. I love how the one layer of frosting matches the peep, that's just pure optical fun. We got home and my daughter dug in, but surprisingly she didn't finish. There's still a chunk of cupcake top left, so I give it a shot. Weird, the base cupcake seems flavorless yet the frosting is oh so potent. On one hand, it makes the 5 year old in me sing at how crazy sugary good the frosting is. On the other hand, it makes older me feel a little dizzy from the sugar high. WOOOOOOOO. Ok, I see why she stopped.

Our last cupcake (on the right) is the CHERRY CHEESECAKE cupcake. It's a cream cheese cupcake with cream cheese frosting inside and out, a graham cracker crust bottom (so cool!) and then it's dusted with graham cracker crust. My wife gives the thumbs up to this one and I'll admit to sneaking a little of the frosting which was indeed cheesy (and awesome like the other frostings).

So overall this place was cool. I like the decor and the cupcake holding ferris wheel was pretty awesome. Unfortunately I can't give a ringing endorsement since there seemed to be a few stumbles along the way. Hey, you know me, I'm super critical. To be honest, if we were walking down Newbury Street again, I know we would totally go back in and try some other seasonal flavors.

Verdict?  Lots of good points but a few issues as well
Buy Again?  Most likely

Ok, stay tuned for Part 2 where we go and get ourselves some ice cream.

Happy Easter Everyone

I just want to say have an awesome Easter. Nothing beats a good Easter egg hunt and a big basket full of candy. I also love honey baked Ham, and potatoes, and fresh veggies, and oh there will be so many desserts on the table. Be safe, hang with family and friends, and enjoy the day.

Ben & Jerry's Strawberry Shortcake Greek Frozen Yogurt

[New for 2012, discontinued]
No no no, I haven't gone nuts and suddenly fallen in love with the new Ben & Jerry's line of Greek Froyo. What I have done is used my wife's enjoyment of the Vanilla Blueberry Graham as an excuse to pick up this pint, take a few sample bites, and then move on with my life.

Ben & Jerry's Strawberry Shortcake Greek Frozen Yogurt
It's a simple combination of Strawberry Greek Froyo and shortbread pieces.
In a non-tangy form, I would probably love this stuff.

April 2012 Slurpee Review : Mountain Berry Blast

Oy! From 46 degrees to 86 back to 16 and now 56.... my word, make up your mind planet. Luckily with the sun, it's just warm enough to go for a nice walk without the coat. I think it's time for a 7-11 run.

DQ April 2012 Blizzard of the Month
Caramel Delight Pie Blizzard Review

yeah, yeah, I know, I know, it's free cone day over at Ben & Jerry's... thing is, I've only got about a half hour for lunch total and I'd rather not spend 45 minutes in line for a free ice cream. The parking lot was full and there were dozens of people lined up outside.... I think it's time to go to DQ.

The April 2012 blizzard of the month is the "new" Caramel Delight Pie blizzard... you know you are in trouble when the lady behind the counter goes "what's it called?". The name doesn't flow, plain and simple, so let's focus on ingredients: Caramel, choco chunks and pie pieces blended with creamy vanilla soft serve crowned with whipped topping.

Shocking, no whip cream! Sure, I'll live, but this always seems to happen with pie based blizzards. The caramel flavor is DQ's typical caramel flavor. It's by far the overriding flavor in this mix, but it's not what wins the show here.

Notice the crazy amount of chocolate chunks in my serving. I saw that the nice lady did a double scoop and the chips are what make this one fun. These are good size, thin chips that add just the right crunch to the scattered pie bits. Thicker chunks would have thudded, and small chunks would have gone unnoticed. Literally every bite was plesantly crunchy (which I loved of course).

So I've got no complaints on this blizzard. It's different and tasty and I just had the sudden urge to get it with heath bar next time, mmmmmmmm. Sorry. This one definitely gets a recommendation for those of you who like to try all the blizzards. You won't be disappointed (unless someone does a terrible job making it).

Verdict?  the choco chunks make this one
Buy Again?  probably

Haagen-Dazs Spiced Peach Crumble
An "Exclusive" Ice Cream Review

[New for 2011] Ok, this is not the review I had planned (that one is still just pictures and no words), but as I was reluctantly working on my taxes today, I had a sudden urge for something different.

I saw the following "EXCLUSIVE" pint at Market Basket for a mere 99 cents. Ya, you heard me, 99 cents. Do they even make a profit at that cost? Probably not, but in their defense, I can't imagine I would have even considered picking this one up for 4 or 5 bucks. I think it's the use of the word spiced that throws me off...

That, or maybe the graphic of the crumble inside the peach throws me off. On one hand I get what they are trying to say, but on the other hand, it doesn't make any bloody sense. I'm probably being too literal, but I suggest Haagen-Dazs lay off the photoshop in the future.

Star Wars Easter Eggs
a.k.a. Dubba's Eggcellent Adventure

You know, I kind of had an epiphany after I posted yesterdays cupcake adventure. See, as a review blogger, it's so easy to get up on my high horse and just bash everything. I mean, look at 2012, it seems like I've been disappointed by almost every product I have tried. However, when you bake (or do anything else creative), you have to get off that high horse and accept the fact that it's hard to make stuff.

Funny thing is, me being me, I'm still critiquing myself the whole way through. I guess some things will never change... but I can change the content of this blog. Sure, we'll still do a quality ice cream review here and there, but it's time to get my hands dirty. It's time to embrace my construction cooking roots and start building my treat expertise one item at a time. And when we're not cooking (or scooping once a month a so), it'll be time to get back to drawing and creating. Yes, its a risk switching things up, but I hope enough of you will stick around for oddball geek projects like this.

"These are not the eggs you're looking for"

Ok, so buckle up, it's gonna be a bumpy ride, I hope you come with me.

[No Star Wars eggs were harmed during the creation of the terrible April Fools Day joke]
