Blue Bunny Caramel Mini Swirls Review
Labels: blue_bunny - ctb - review - treats
[New for 2013] Part of the free blue bunny shipment included the latest edition to their mini champ lineup. I do love cones, and blue bunny's versions haven't disappointed in the past.
DOH! Wait! I just realized they aren't called Champ! Mini Swirls anymore. They've dropped the Champ! from the mini cones and are using it on their full size cones only. Yeah, that makes sense. The champ is big and powerful, the mini swirls are cute and little. Anyway, there's something about the box design that bothers me, so let's focus on that big logo in the top right corner reminding us that Blue Bunny is granting 100 wishes for it's 100th birthday!

Turkey Hill Peanut Butter Pie Frozen Yogurt
Labels: container - discontinued - graham - Nick - nutty - review - Turkey_Hill
[By Nick, discontinued before 2015] Seeing as the ice cream gods like to spite me and not let me find Haagen-Dazs Peanut Butter Pie, I guess I have to resort to reviewing Turkey Hill Peanut Butter Pie Frozen Yogurt. Besides sharing the same name and base flavor, the similarities end there.
Turkey Hill’s version is made up of “Peanut Butter frozen yogurt with peanut butter cups and graham crust swirl.” If that doesn’t sound amazing to you, then you seriously need to get yourself checked out. The combination of peanut butter and graham crackers is delicious in pb s’mores, so why not combine the two in ice cream frozen yogurt? The peanut butter cups are just an added bonus to the mix. Also, coming in at about half the calories of Haagen-Dazs flavor is not too shabby.

Lovin Scoopful Caramel Chocolate Heaven
A Light Ice Cream Review
Labels: container - ctb - light - lovin_scoopful - review
Well it's been over two years since we've had Lovin' Scoopful light ice cream on the blog. I tried their so good cookies & cream and yummy cake & cookie dough and while they both had their good points, the texture of the ice cream was off, something I blamed on the old grocery store they came from.
This is caramel chocolate heaven and I choose this for two reasons. One, this seemed to be the go to flavor when I did some research after my initial lovin' scoopful review. Two, I've come to realize that there aren't a whole lot of chocolate and caramel flavors out there.

New candy bites for all your sundae topping needs
So I've been eating way too much candy lately. I know some of these may not be new-new, but they're new enough to me that I wanted to catalog of of them. Technically my plan was to make a sundae for each of the following treats but it was just so much easier to shove the candy in my face instead.
I was absolutely stoked to see Heath pieces. The pieces concept may seem like a dumb gimmick but I'm already a giant fan of special dark pieces and york pieces, so I have high hopes here. Now it says milk chocolate & toffee candy in a crunchy shell, but I see three colors. Which is which?

Talenti Banana Chocolate Swirl Gelato #16
[New for 2012] Back in January, I was jonesin' to try a new Talenti flavor but it's been forever since I've seen something different. I know some of you dig banana flavors way more than I do (like my wife), so I decided to pick this one up in the hopes of taking a few test bites and then pawning it off on her.
"Deliciously rich banana gelato is blended with a golden Argentine caramel swirl and bits of elegant bittersweet chocolate to create a bold flavor reminiscent of the best banana flambé."

Friendly's Jim Dandy Sundae Review
[By Nick] I use to love these Friendly’s sundae cups growing up. They were a staple in my family’s freezer for those times my siblings and I wanted to go to Friendly’s yet my parents weren’t in the same mood. I don’t blame them seeing as little kids running around everywhere isn’t exactly the best dining ambiance. For some reason though I haven’t had one in years and was a little overwhelmed when I saw all the varieties they make now. From what I remember there was always the original sundae cup, a Reese’s version as well as a Snickers one. Now they have 8 different varieties to choose from. Seeing as we don’t cover too many banana products on the site, I decided to pick up one of their Jim Dandy Sundae cups to try.
For those of you who don’t know, The Jim Dandy is a normal sundae on Friendly’s menu which consists of “5 Scoops of ice cream, strawberry or pineapple, marshmallow and chocolate topping, a freshly split banana, sprinkles and walnuts”. It is more or less Friendly’s take on a banana split even though they do also serve a more tradition banana split as well. Similarly to its namesake, the sundae cup is made up of “Banana/Strawberry Ice Cream covered with fudge, marshmallow, whipped topping, walnuts & chocolate flavored sprinkles”.

Ciao Bella Sea Salt Caramel Gelato Squares
Labels: ciao_bella - ctb - review - treats
[New for 2013] Still bitter from never having found Ciao Bella S'mores Gelato Squares, I got even more cranky when Junk Food Guy revealed yet another version that I thought I may never find....
I was hoping for something new during my trip to Roche Bros, but I had no idea I would spy the new Ciao Bella Sea Salt Caramel Gelato Squares there. My taste buds went nuts with the thought of sea salt caramel gelato with caramel and chocolate swirl and chocolate squares. Does that not sound like a thorough melding of the caramel and chocolate experience? I'm stoked, I really am.

Edy's / Dreyer's Slow Churned Salted Caramel Pretzel
[new for 2013, available May - August] So Edy's ( Dreyer's ) is rocking a set of summer flavors this year that are available now through the end of summer. We've got German Chocolate Cake Spectacular and Sea Salt Caramel Pretzel, both in regular and slow churned versions. Then we've got Take the Cake slow churned ice cream versus Three Stripes your out grand ice cream. So that's three of each or six total options. The light versions rock more of a monotone color pattern while the grand versions are, well, more grand in their coloring. It's a neat little design touch that's fun to notice, but anyway, let's check out of first offering.
This is slow churned sunny Salted Caramel Pretzel ice cream. That's right, don't forget Edy's has listened to consumers and ditched frozen dairy desserts from their line up on top of improving their regular formulas. This one is vanilla light ice cream with a salted caramel swirl and pretzel pieces. They had me at caramel pretzel.

yeah, no excuse for the bad picture, sorry

Perry's Sponge Candy Ice Cream
Labels: ctb - perrys - review - scoop_shop
[Scoop shops in 2013, Pints in 2015] Ok, my last Perry's Ice Cream review didn't go as well as I hoped, but maybe this one is going to provide the caramel kick I was so looking for in Movie Time.
You see, Perry's Sponge Candy Ice Cream is the kind of crazy flavor that could be epic.... or send me into sugar shock, but hey, I'm tough, I'll go first, no worries. We've got caramel sugar flavored ice cream with caramelized sugar swirl and sponge candy pieces. Have you ever heard of such a thing? I haven't, and that just gets me all the more excited.

Homemade Brand Butter Pecan Ice Cream
[By Nick] Last but hopefully not least from Homemade Brand is their Butter Pecan ice cream. Now I’m not going to lie, this was easily the flavor I was most excited about trying when I received my free shipment.
Homemade describes this as butter roasted pecans that have been mixed into their brown sugar ice cream. I know what you’re about to say “but Nick, you always complain when companies deviate from the norm when it comes to Butter Pecan ice cream” and my friend, you would be right. However, there are exceptions to the rule and this is one of them. I mean, come on, how often do you see brown sugar ice cream? Now I still dislike it when companies call something Butter Pecan because they include those but if this one tastes half as good as I think it will, I’ll have no qualms with the folks over at Homemade Brand.

Ben & Jerry's Truffle Trifecta
A Walgreen's Exclusive Ice Cream
Labels: ben_n_jerrys - container - ctb - limited - marshmallow - review - Walgreens
[New for 2013, Non-GMO in 2015] Can you believe that yet another location has gotten in on the "exclusive" Ben & Jerry's list? This pint puts Walgreens in the company of Target, 7-11, and Walmart. Exclusive flavors tend to be decent, and sometimes hard to find, but for me it's time to check this one off the list.
This is Ben & Jerry's Truffle Trifecta ice cream. It's chocolate ice cream with marshmallow, fudge, and caramel truffles. That's right, three kinds of "truffles". Sure, truffles tend to be cubes in most ice creams, but "cup trifecta" just isn't that much fun to say. (next year's exclusive flavor: cup quartet?)

Celebrity Apprentice Ice Cream Finale
with Magic Swirtle and Macadamia Mash-up
Labels: container - ctb - discontinued - review - Walgreens
[New for 2013, still existed in 2015 without the celebrity apprentice (and OV) branding]
So, do you guys watch the celebrity apprentice? I remember the original season of the apprentice that actually use to teach us about teamwork, marketing, and business.... and I will admit to watching a large part of season 12, but overall I forget about it but I might watch it tonight because apparently the season is ending with an ice cream showdown, how cool is that? Which ever flavor sold more this past week will be crowned the winner tonight. So who did I vote for with my $4.19?
This is Penn Jillette's Vanilla & Chocolate Magic Swirtle Ice Cream benefiting Opportunity Village. It's rich vanilla ice cream with a sea salt chocolate swirl and fudge caramel candy pieces. Sea salt chocolate swirl has your attention doesn't it?

Haagen-Dazs Peanut Butter Pie Ice Cream
Labels: container - Häagen-Dazs - limited - nutty - review
[New for 2013, returned in 2014] Ok, I know everyone and their uncle seems to have found today's flavor before I did, but that doesn't mean I'm still not excited. Peanut Butter is one of my favorite things. It's right up their with chocolate, and ice cream, and pie, and, well, you get the idea. If only someone could mix up all of my favorite things into one easy to hold package....
Behold! I've got my grubby little paws on limited edition Haagen-Dazs Peanut Butter Pie Ice Cream. H-D calls it "peanut butter pie ice cream is made with ribbons of smooth peanut butter and soft chocolate cookie pieces folded into creamy peanut butter ice cream". So much potential awesomeness. I better share this one with my wife to avoid the temptation to scarf down the whole thing.

Stonyfield Gotta Have Java Nonfat Frozen Yogurt
Labels: all_natural - coffee - container - discontinued - frozen_yogurt - review - stonyfield
[By Nick, Discontinued] Awhile back, one of our readers mentioned that in their opinion, Stonyfield made the greatest coffee frozen yogurt. Well to be honest, I had tried their Gotta Have Java flavor a long time ago but couldn’t remember being as blown away as they were. So with that comment, I thought it was about time I revisited that flavor and gave it a proper review. Hopefully my memory is fuzzy and it truly is as good as they say it is.
The description is pretty straightforward and it looks like we’re going back into their non-fat line. Gary once again chimes in saying “If you crave a real coffee indulgence, this is nirvana. My wife Meg grew up drinking robust coffee in a second-generation French household, and this stuff aces even her test. We've combined superb organic coffee flavor with creamy organic nonfat frozen yogurt. I give you divine bliss, java lover. –Gary” Well I guess if his wife approves it must be good right? I don’t really think of the French when I think of coffee appreciation but I’ll take Gary’s word on this one. One thing to note, the cow is now wearing something that resembles an ascot. Yeah, I just went all Scooby-Doo on you guys.

TCBY Frozen Yogurt Strawberry Swirl Bars Review

[New for 2012] If ever there was a review that was forgotten, it's this one right here. These bad boys were in the 4 year anniversary photo and I have no excuse for why it's taken a year to post the pictures. It's not these are bad, I actually kind of like them, I just never put them up, so my apologies to all.

A box is (6) 2.75 fluid ounce TCBY strawberry swirl bars

New Orleans Ponchatoula Strawberry
and New Orleans Baked Alaska
Labels: container - fruity - new_orleans - review - strawberry
April showers never happened, and now here we are in beautiful May. The strawberries in the store aren't quite in season yet, but that doesn't mean I'm not in the mood for a nice fresh berry kick.
This is New Orleans Ponchatoula Strawberry Ice Cream. "A smooth and creamy strawberry ice cream bursting with the freshest Ponchatoula strawberries". I do love strawberry ice cream!

Arby's Triple Berry Shake
No sooner was Nosh Episode 2 in the can then I was already planning my treats to dig in to for Episode 3. I've had a hankerin' for Arby's ever since I saw their new shake, and yes I know I swore off Arby's shakes, but it's time for a visit. Mmmm, I can taste the curly fries already... oh, which reminds me, I found Arby's curly fries in the freezer section of my local grocery store. They ain't bad, but they just don't compare to the real thing.
Episode 3 of The Nosh Show is now available! Head on over to The Nosh Show website to listen and to see a complete rundown of everything we talked about. We even have a giveaway for you this time (as if the sounds of our voices isn't a gift already.... sorry, couldn't resist). We get a little crazy in this episode including a flashback to my childhood. Good Times.

Yoplait Raspberry Fig Greek Frozen Yogurt
Labels: container - discontinued - frozen_yogurt - fruity - greek - Nick - review - yoplait
[By Nick, new for 2012, discontinued] All I can say is wow right now. Today marks the one year anniversary of my first review here at On Second Scoop. To be honest, that was one year longer than I thought I would ever write for a website. I've had my ups and downs as well some surprises this year. I am very grateful to be able to share them all with you guys. I just wanted to take a second to thank some people. First off, thank you Dubba for letting me write for your blog and putting up with my random emails on a daily basis. I'd like to thank all of my fellow bloggers for all the support and help they've given to me throughout the year. Last but not least I want to thank you all of you guys (and girls). Without you, my reviews wouldn't even exist. If you've left me a comment, positive or negative, I highly appreciate it. Even if you haven't left a comment but just read my reviews, thanks as well. It really means a lot to me. Like always if you have a comment, suggestion or just want to talk send me an email nickrovo[at]gmail[dot]com or hit me up on twitter @NickRovo. I love hearing from you everyone! Well here's hoping for another great year of reviews and hopefully I won’t almost die this time…
Okay enough reminiscing, we’ve got a review to do. I thought what better way to celebrate my one year than by trying a product that incorporates the main flavor of my first review, the underutilized fig. When Dubba first posted about the new yoplait frozen yogurt, their Raspberry Fig greek yogurt was the only flavor to peak my interest. Ever since then, I've been on the lookout for it but to no luck. When Wells asked me if there were any of their new products I wanted to try, I jumped at the opportunity and requested a free pint. Seeing as my love for raspberries equals that of Dubba’s, this one seems right up my alley.
Just like the other Yoplait products, there's no description to be found on the packaging or online. I'm just going to think rationally and say that it’s a raspberry greek frozen yogurt base with figs mixed in. Yeah, that doesn't sound too exciting but I'm curious to see how the pairing of raspberries and figs turns out.

Talenti Gelato Chocolate Chip (Stracciatella) #10
Labels: all_natural - container - discontinued - gelato - review - talenti
[Ended 2018] Ok, a lunchtime excursion has led me to Roche Brothers grocery store. Hmmmm, looks like they've gotten a fresh shipment of talenti gelato as these frost free containers are sporting the new lid design (but not the new container design(?)). Hmmm, do I go chocolate chip or do I go vanilla since everyone raves about it?
Ok, after comparing the short ingredient list on both containers, I go with Talenti gelato Chocolate Chip Stracciatella. Reminder: this is the last generation container.

Friday Night Fight with Blue Bunny Birthday Party and Perry's Party Ice Cream Sandwiches
Labels: blue_bunny - cake_flavor - fight - perrys - treats
I love a good friday night fight, especially when I've got two very similar products to compare. Oh yeah, it's been way too long since the last fight. Get your taste buds ready!
In the Blue Trunks, weighing in at 4.25 ounces, it's the Blue Bunny Birthday Party Ice Cream Sandwich. Blue Bunny has recently upgraded their standard sandwiches to the heavyweight class by coming in at "30% bigger" than last year's 3.25 ounce version. Is this a free upgrade to what was the smallest ice cream sandwich around? Technically no since now you get 8 instead of 10 sandwiches in a box.
Side note: Blue Bunny has always had a "BIG" line of individually wrapped ice cream sandwiches (I had one three years ago).
In the blue and pink trunks, weighing in at 4 ounces, it's Perry's Party Sandwiches. Now Perry's is definitely the underdog, not only as the smaller company (out of New York), not only as the smaller sandwich, but there's also only 6 in a box. That said, I wouldn't underestimate Perry's, they make good stuff.

Skinny Cow Chocolate Covered Cherry Cones
Labels: fruity - limited - Nick - Skinny_Cow - treats
[By Nick, Limited Edition for 2013] At the beginning of the year, Dubba and I made predictions for what this year would be like in the ice cream world. My prediction was that there would be more fruity flavors. Well Skinny Cow is here to support my prediction with their new limited edition Chocolate Covered Cherry Cones.
I have to commend Skinny Cow for venturing into the severely neglected cherry ice cream novelty market. Besides the Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia bar, no other product seems to come to mind. Coming from a cherry lover, that is just a complete injustice. Strawberry has had its turn to rule long enough! It’s time for a revolution, a very red revolution... Settle down Nick, you have ice cream to review.
This year they decided to ditch the whole “slimited” branding in favor of plain old limited branding. I thought slimited was actually a brilliant marketing point while Dubba thought it was a joke. Also, unlike last year’s Mmmmocha truffle bars, there’s nothing demasculinizing on the box this time. Really the only thing of note on the box is that there’s a cute little ice cream cone upc code. I’m not sure if this is on all of their packages but I thought it was a unique touch.

Free stuff and the State of the Freezer Address
5th Anniversary Edition
Do you know how many times I've written this post in my head? At least a half dozen if not more. So many different things I want to say after five years. Do I tell stories or visions? Do I look back or look ahead? I don't know. I think one blog year equals at least 10 real years, so that makes me over 50 in internet years right? I mean, I already had my mid-blog-life crisis, so it's all vacations and grandkids from here right? Hmmm, at least I haven't lost my ability to babble.
Starting over: WELCOME! Welcome welcome welcome to the blog's fifth birthday, or blogiversary if you must. I can't believe we're still here. I can't believe my freezers are still full. Let's take a quick peak at them.
Upstairs is a mess, plain and simple. The usual breakfast food, frozen veggies, and stuff you've already read about (or will soon enough). This is where ice cream goes to be inhaled by my family.... or to be left and forgotten (a few of them are a little old... shhhhh, don't tell anyone).

New Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup
A Walmart Exclusive Ice Cream
[New for 2013] Ahhhhh, there's nothing like the first mow of the season.... to remind you how old you are. Hehehehe, ok, I may be young at heart but I'm pretty sure my joints are twice as old as they should be. Ahhh, it is what it is. I think it's time to call it a night and reward myself with what I found at Walmart this morning.
This is Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup ice cream. That's right, Peanut Butter Cup now has a chocolaty brother to keep him company on Walmart shelves. Is this just a gimmick? You might think that, but look closely. Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream with Peanut Butter Cups. This is no simple chocolate base with a pb swirl that we've seen a thousand times. This is more like Graeter's version where the peanut butter and chocolate have been fused together in the base. I'm pretty stoked!

Ben & Jerry's Pina Colada Ice Cream
A Limited Edition for 2013
Labels: ben_n_jerrys - coconut - container - fruity - review
[New Pint form for 2013] As mentioned in our 2013 Product Guide, Ben & Jerry's has decided to take last year's scoop shop only test flavor Pina Colada and turn it into a limited edition pint flavor for our mid-year pleasure. The official release dates are from May to August, and sure enough, it's the beginning of May and what do we have here at Walmart?
Tada! Ben & Jerry's Pina Colada is Coconut Ice Cream with Pineapple Chunks. My well known distrust of coconut and pineapple would have made me hesitant to try this one, but thankfully I got a test sample last year.

G.S. Gelato Sea Salt Caramel Review
[By Nick] Last up from G.S. Gelato is their Sea Salt Caramel Gelato. After my previous experiences with Sea Salt Caramel flavors, my expectations for this one are very high. G.S. has yet to let me down when it comes to delivering the flavor so here’s hoping that streak continues. Once again, I just want to remind you that the G.S. line of gelato is only a base, though after my Tiramisu review I did get an email from G.S. saying they liked the idea of adding mix-ins to their branded line so be on the lookout for those products in the future. As of now though, there won’t be any mix-ins or swirls of caramel, just a straight up base of Sea
Salt Caramel flavored gelato.
Easily the most terrible part about these products has to be the wait for the gelato to temper. 15 minutes doesn’t sound like a long time but when you’re hungry and craving some sea salt caramel it seems like an eternity. If you can’t tell, I’m typing this as I wait for it to temper. So yeah, nice weather we’re having right? Sorry to cut this conversation short, 15 minutes have elapsed and it’s time for me to open up this pint.
Salt Caramel flavored gelato.

Choco Peanut Butter Brownie Blizzard
New May DQ Blizzard of the Month
Labels: DQ - nutty - review - scoop_shop
[New for May 2013] It's the start of a new month and that means it's time to scope out the new blizzard. Dairy Queen is continuing the peanut butter streak from April's peanut butter filled blizzard. I've got (fairly) high hopes for this one.
As advertised
Peanut butter topping, choco chunks and brownie pieces in creamy vanilla soft serve

My Lunch
It's got a nice light beige peanut butter hue to the base

New Dunkin Donuts Berry Blast Coolatta Review
[New for 2013] I love coolattas, well, I love strawberry coolattas and I long for the day when another coolatta takes it's rightful place as a worthy successor to my beloved favorite. There have been plenty of imposters, coolattas that lacked the fruity puree that makes strawberry so special. Well, on the way to work what do I hear but the traffic being brought to me by the new berry blast coolatta. Yeah, I'm excited.
So here is the new Dunkin Donuts Berry Blast Coolatta.
