Friday Night Fight with Blue Bunny Birthday Party and Perry's Party Ice Cream Sandwiches

I love a good friday night fight, especially when I've got two very similar products to compare. Oh yeah, it's been way too long since the last fight. Get your taste buds ready!

In the Blue Trunks, weighing in at 4.25 ounces, it's the Blue Bunny Birthday Party Ice Cream Sandwich. Blue Bunny has recently upgraded their standard sandwiches to the heavyweight class by coming in at "30% bigger" than last year's 3.25 ounce version. Is this a free upgrade to what was the smallest ice cream sandwich around? Technically no since now you get 8 instead of 10 sandwiches in a box.

Side note: Blue Bunny has always had a "BIG" line of individually wrapped ice cream sandwiches (I had one three years ago).

In the blue and pink trunks, weighing in at 4 ounces, it's Perry's Party Sandwiches. Now Perry's is definitely the underdog, not only as the smaller company (out of New York), not only as the smaller sandwich, but there's also only 6 in a box. That said, I wouldn't underestimate Perry's, they make good stuff.

Round 1: Getting my Attention

Ok, well we've already seen both the boxes and I guess I'd give the edge to Blue Bunny because the graphics are a bit crisper. I'm not a huge fan of the blue glazed cake pieces on the BB box, but it's hard to ignore the closeup of the overfilled sandwiches.

Strangely enough, it's the big pink six that catches my eye first with the Perry's box. That hard core ice cream sandwich fan inside of me just goes "mmmmm, six sandwiches". I know, it's silly, but my brain is already planning out six snack breaks.

Round 2: Unboxing and unwrapping

Well, I certainly know which one came from Blue Bunny. Perry's is rocking the old school style wrapper but in a plastic form which is something I've never seen before. What lies beneath the packaging?

Whoa, that Blue Bunny is a mighty sandwich but there is very much a part of me that gravitates towards the traditional (Perry's) shape.

Ok, a side shot here to really emphasize the thickness of our competitors. Both of them do have sprinkles, but Perry's are much more noticeable.

What Blue Bunny lacks in sprinkles, it makes up for with a very bright blue swirl. It's funny how non-white the Perry's sandwich is, I wonder if they've got something in store for us?

Round 3: Taste

Well, there's no denying that blue bunny has a strong birthday cake flavor and it's pretty much what I expected from them. Perry's was the real wild card here and it turns out that the flavor is more mild in comparison. In fact, you get less of a cake vibe and more of a sugar cookie vibe. I took my sandwich apart and the cookie flavor seems to be emanating from both the wafers and the ice cream. Funky.

Are there any other surprises? Well, I'm getting a fair bit of crunch from Perry's sprinkles. I don't even notice them in blue bunny except on rare occasion. Granted I do seem to flip flop on how I feel about sprinkles in ice cream, but they are working for me here.

So what does the rest of the household think? The youngest judge likes blue bunny (shocking!). Judge #2  appreciates both, but prefers Perrys. Me, well, you've probably already figured out that I'm leaning towards  Perry's too. The blue bunny is neat, but you all know I prefer milder cake flavors and not the strong stuff.

Rematch

Both fighters can hold their heads up high as they both brought a unique take to the party scene. In fact, I just did a rematch before releasing this post and I'm torn as to who really wins this one. The birthday party struck me as less potent this time while I started questioning how different the Perry's really was. Usually I can pick a winner but I just can't do it here.

Let's put it this way. If you want something that the kids will dig, go blue bunny. If you want to take things a little easier, then you might want to consider the Perry's version. Good job fellas, you both tried. Now go hit the showers and head on home.

  1. Surprised the perrys filling was "mild". I grabbed their "birthday bash" (first time trying their stuff btw, im impressed. wish it was more readily available) and the cake flavor/sweetness its VERY strong...for me its a plus, but I can see it being off-putting for some.

  2. I missed the good old fights - thanks for bringing them back! I only wish I could get Perry's in my area, so if I see the B.B. ones I'm gonna have to 'settle' for them ;)
