Okay enough reminiscing, we’ve got a review to do. I thought what better way to celebrate my one year than by trying a product that incorporates the main flavor of my first review, the underutilized fig. When Dubba first posted about the new yoplait frozen yogurt, their Raspberry Fig greek yogurt was the only flavor to peak my interest. Ever since then, I've been on the lookout for it but to no luck. When Wells asked me if there were any of their new products I wanted to try, I jumped at the opportunity and requested a free pint. Seeing as my love for raspberries equals that of Dubba’s, this one seems right up my alley.
Well it’s still very hard but I’m able to scoop around the edges at least. The base is definitely raspberry. It’s very natural tasting and slightly tart. It’s all around pleasing but a tad bit light on total impact I was actually expecting for a higher amount of tartness coming from both the greek yogurt and the raspberries but it’s very mild.
So what was that color difference in the middle? Well it’s actually a mix of both raspberry puree and figs! The raspberry puree amps up the raspberry factor making for a nice contrast from the light base. The figs’ flavor seems to get overpowered by the raspberries. You’re able to taste them every now and again but not as often as I’d like. When you’re able to taste them, you get an almost fig newton vibe going on. In reality though, they mainly just add a change of mouth feel to the product.
The texture of this froyo is kind of weird. While it is creamy, it leaves a chalky feeling in your mouth. I’ve never experienced this before and I’m certainly not a fan of it. Looking over the ingredients, I realized they don’t even use actual greek yogurt in the product like other brands do. I remember the whole story about Yoplait’s normal greek yogurt not actually being true greek yogurt so this doesn’t surprise me. I think this weird chalkiness is coming from the “milk protein concentrate” that is high up on the list. It’s a shame too; I really like the flavor of this one but that chalkiness ruins the experience for me.
Verdict? Awesome flavor, not so awesome texture.
Buy Again? Nope, the chalkiness is a deal breaker.
this is the only flavor I havent tried, but the honey caramel reigns supreme for me...did u happen to let it sit out/thaw for a bit? I like to let mine sit out for at least 15 mins, then it turns into a way more familar ice cream/froyo texture. I do agree right out of the freezer its very chalky and brittle
ReplyDeletejust saw u let it thaw 5 mins...if u ever give this brand another chance try 15-20.
ReplyDeleteI let it thaw for an initial 5-10 minutes taking photos and such. Then I just let it sit out for another 5 minutes before I could actually semi penetrate it. I guess I'll give another flavor a shot and let it sit out longer and see what happens.
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary Nick; always enjoy your reviews!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, Anon!
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw this product in my local grocery store, I thought the flavor sounded tasty, and I was interested in trying out a greek frozen yogurt, so I picked it up. I was let down to discover that the frozen yogurt tasted chalky. My wife did not agree so I searched on the internet to see what other people thought, and I felt vindicated when I saw you shared my opinion. Now that I know we have similar tastes, any recommendations in the category of frozen yogurt?
ReplyDelete@John C: I have a future post which tries to remove the chalky texture ad succeeds. (Hint: Let it sit out for at least 30 minutes) As for recommendations, what are you looking for? Something fruity, chocolate bases ect? We do have a search bar on the side of the page which lets you filter our reviews based on the type of frozen dessert. Just switch the product style to frozen yogurt and click submit. Hope that helps!
ReplyDeleteThanks Nick! I'll try both of those things.
ReplyDelete@John C: No problem! If you have any more questions or flavors you'd like reviewed you can always send me an email: nickrovo@gmail.com
