Turkey Hill Fried Ice Cream
a.k.a. Mmmmmm, Breakfast Sundaes

Turkey Hill Fried Ice Cream has been the limited edition April flavor of the month for several years now, but somehow I've always missed out on it (blame the fact I live at the end of their delivery area I guess). Now I'm not the only one trying it for the first time this year, you may have already read that Junk Food Guy tried it for the So Good blog. I got the distinct impression that he was kind of misled by the name. Let's dig in and see if we can figure out why.

limited edition Turkey Hill Fried Ice Cream
Cinnamon ice cream swirled with cinnamon sopapilla and sweet tostada pieces
(We can never have enough cinnamon ice creams, so I'm totally psyched on this one)

Mmmmm, the lovely smell of cinnamon.

Oh this one looks awesome, I love how it scoops. I love the swirl too, but it's very hard to describe. Sometimes it reminds me of a gooey oatmeal cookie dough. Other times it reminds me of something much more cinnamon. Wait, it kind of reminds me of my favorite muffin = the top of a nice sugary Cinnamon Chip Muffin. No no, maybe it's reminding me of something else. Yeah, it's one of those flavors that torments my verbal skills.

The overall texture is very gritty which is something I appreciate in the right setting. I'm not sure if it's the base itself or if there are tiny bits of something mixed in. Either way, it does reinforce the treat aspect.

The big chunks are few and far between, I think I've had like two in this serving. The name makes you think there are going to be fried chunks of something in here, but it's just not happening, so I can see why some might be disappointed when trying this. The thing for me is that there is so little cinnamon competition that a flavor like this is greatly appreciated by folks such as myself. Cinnamon is just one of those neat things and sometimes a little of an ice cream like this can go a long way. For example, I had some before mowing, and some after. This is one of those ice creams that just works at any time.

On Second Scoop: I don't know whether it's accidental or on purpose, but for some reason a lot of the Turkey Hill limited edition flavors work really well as breakfast ice creams. To prove this, let me humbly present a mighty breakfast sundae. Start with a thoroughly toasted cinnamon toast waffle, add some light scoops of fried ice cream, douse with whip cream, and then sprinkle with crushed life cereal for good measure. The chewing process went something like this "bite, interesting, bite, interesting, NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM..... I need another one!". I was hoping for the best and the cinnamon on cinnamon on cinnamon flavoring came together great. I had the crunchy waffle on the bottom, the nice ice cream and whip cream merging in the middle, and then some more crunch on top. Man was this tasty. I now crave this for breakfast every morning. In fact, I started a facebook page to catalog my journey. Thankfully I have found another container of this ice cream to help me on my way and I always have plenty of waffles around.

Verdict?  Good!
Buy Again?  I already did (got more waffles too)

  1. Great review - one of my fav TH flavors! Have you ever thought to add crushed bacon on top of that sundae? I too think there isn't enough cinnamon in the world ;)
P.S. What I think they were trying to do with this flavor is evoke a churro like taste.

  2. Is streusel the word you were looking for with this one?

  3. ehhh..... you could throw streusel in there, but I'm not sure it's the right description still.
