Gifford's Flyfishing Fudge Ice Cream

Alright, it's been a really long time since we had Gifford's on the blog. So long in fact that since the last review, Gifford's (of Maine) bought Gifford's (of Maryland) to really take their operation up a notch. Now they do have several fun new flavors this year that I've been meaning to try, but I had no particular intentions of trying them today until I saw that Gifford's ice cream quarts were undergoing a rare sale for $2.99 a piece. That's too good a deal to pass up. Now to pick a flavor....

Gifford's Flyfishing Fudge Ice Cream
M&Ms, cookie dough, and chocolate chunks jump in and out
of a fudge river flowing through vanilla ice cream

I'll be honest, I was hoping for a ton of M&Ms on my first glance, but no need to fear just yet.

Hehehe, well, it's certainly busy now! Chocolate chunks, cookie dough, and lots of swirl. This reminds me more of a busy scoop shop flavor rather than something you typically see in the freezer aisle.

It seems like a long time since I've had M&Ms in ice creams, and full size ones no less... oh yeah, there's the crack of the molars. Ahhh the joys of frozen candy. I've always had a love/hate relationship with full size M&M's in ice cream. Sure they stand out more than mini M&Ms, but man, are they solid! The chocolate chips they've included are way easier on my teeth.

Time to go digging for cookie dough. I see them here and there, but I want to taste one.... ahhh, there's a bit of cookie dough. Ha, I could hear the sugar crunching on my teeth. I really dig the big hunk of somewhat soft texture change, but there is zero cookie dough flavor making it's way through the fudge. In fact, I can't taste the base at all, there's just way too much fudge flavor.  I mean, the texture is good enough, but it's hard to give a super accurate read on this first scoop.

Well, my serving is done, but I need to ask this before I go: is there an ice cream with peanut M&M's in it? That would be crazy! (hopefully crazy good and not crazy, teeth breaking bad)

On Second Scoop: You know what? I'm pretty excited about second scooping this one. I think my expectations are set where they need to be to have a nice afternoon snack... My new thoughts: Why not use pre-split M&Ms? And why can't there be more cookie dough (the star of this quart)? The quality of the fudge just isn't where I want it to be. I know this isn't premium ice cream, but it comes across as more budget than mainstream.

On Third Scoop: Just to be clear, I can see how the diversity of this ice cream might put it on someone's favorite list. It's a busy flavor that makes a nice afternoon snack, I just don't personally love it.

Verdict?  has moments, overall so-so
Buy Again?  nah

  1. From your multiple scoop postings, I feel like you were having a moral dilemma Dubba ;) Nice pun with the word "mainstream" and it being a fishing ice cream..haha I couldn't resist!

  2. yeah, it's one of those flavors that's flawed but cool at the same time.

  3. I'm sorry, but I beg to differ with your review. This ice cream is delicious. Now you reviewed it in 2013, so perhaps the recipe has changed but no way does this ice cream deserve a "nah".

  4. Hello, thank you for noticing this is an older review, I appreciate that (I've had people argue with reviews that are 7-8 years old).

That said, I think you proved the point I make at the end of the review. I specifically said that I could see people enjoying this one just as you did, but that this one isn't for me. I just didn't dig all of the fudge sauce. My "nah" doesn't mean it's terrible, it just means that it's something that I wouldn't personally repurchase. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

  5. Saw Gifford's is $2.50 at Roche Bros this week. Never had it. This flavor looked tempting but a little much...ever tried muddy boots? Old fashioned vanilla? They don't carry "world's best chocolate" (it can't be anyway, given the calories count). Probably will pass. I just stocked up on talenti on sale last week. Not Ben and Jerry's or Brigham's to me, but still quite good.

  6. what's the point of commenting if you have never tried it?

also, brigham's is terrible nowadays, such a lower quality then what they once were.

  7. I would have thought you'd appreciate any comments and questions from fellow ice cream lovers and I was curious about other flavors. No need to be rude.

  8. there was a lot going on around your questions so your point was unclear.

  9. Is there a way to get this sent to my house?? Had it on vacation in Maine and I'm just craving it. It's all my favorites in one scoop. LOVE IT!!!!

  10. Afraid not. They were supposed to expand further down the east coast (past New England) but I'm not really sure how well that plan went.
