Breyers Raspberry Cheesecake Gelato

[New for 2014, Discontinued] Ever since theimpulsivebuy.com spotted Breyers gelato hitting the freezer aisle, Nick and I have been searching high and low for any of the four new flavors. Well, last night I had to run in to walmart and what do I see? One lone container sitting amongst the regular Breyers flavors (funny, it wasn't there two days ago). Now cheesecake isn't usually on the top of my priority list, but I'll take it!

Breyers GELATO Indulgences : Raspberry Cheesecake
Cheesecake gelato with luscious raspberry sauce & gourmet graham crumble

Oh how I adore frozen treats that present so well. I'm stoked for the great looking crumble on top (must resist urge to scoop it all off first). Ok, I take my first bite and it's soft, it's more like mousse than anything else. It's definitely softer than talenti (and way softer than HD).

I take a few more bites to investigate and there's definitely a bit of gumminess to it. If blindfolded, I might think this was a frozen dairy dessert. Yeah, I dig straight down for several more bites and I'm not overly impressed. Cheesecake flavor is decent and not overpowering, but the texture seems wrong (though ironically this says product of Italy on the bottom).

Time for more crumbles. They are softer than you expect, and not real sugary. While they may show graham crackers on the label, that's not how it comes across... I guess there is a bit of graham flavor there, but it's more like graham cake than graham cracker (this reminds me of a bread I've had but I cant remember the name of it).

The swirl does go all the way down and has a gel-like consistency. If you grab a little too much it might over power you. It's not bad though, not too sweet, not too tart.

I think we'll call this container four servings. Basically there are two pieces/squirts in to the container, and about half a squirt should tide me over. Ok, 1/4 quarter gone, let's go recap.

Ok, this is not a bad product. I still foresee a lot of people liking it, and I think my wife will dig this particular flavor. That said, this is not a great product. When compared to Talenti or Gelato Fiasco, this is definitely a more economical, main stream gelato-like product. Just like Haagen-Daz gelato seems too much like their regular ice cream, this product reminds me too much of Breyers gummy frozen dairy desserts. They must be using some of the same tricks and the more I sit here and think about it, the more it kind of annoys me that they went that road. I just don't like gummy in my frozen treats.

Verdict?  relatively cheap at $4.42, but is it really gelato?
Buy this product line Again?  I'll still try the other flavors (like Triple Chocolate)

Note: Thanks to reader Eve, we now know that these Breyer's gelatos seem to bare some relationship to various Carte D'or flavors from across Europe.

  1. I'm so glad you reviewed this Dubba; been wanting to try it.

I had high hopes for this one but it sounds like the taste and texture just aren't there. The consistency and graham swirl both sound too soft for me.

It does look very pretty in the container but I will stick with Talenti.

    Enjoy your weekend!

  2. I agree with you 100% about the texture being gummy. I picked up the other 3 today. The tiramisu was passable. The vanilla caramel and the triple chocolate are not very good. Buyers remorse. Definitely disappointing. I'm sticking with Talenti.

  5. Frozen Dairy Gelati-like Dessert :) I need to coin that term before the big companies start using it.

  6. I had the chocolate, the curls on top taste like wax, chew like wax, the ingredients are Gargum garbage....not impressed at all. If I'm going to put all those calories in me-they better be worth it.

  7. The commercial where the parents are refusing to give their child some gelato ice cream is just awful. To refuse a child and advertise it on television is just plain cruel. I do not think it is funny, whomever thought of making this commercial is just plain sick. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES.
