For something with no fat or added sugar, this one scoops amazingly just like regular ice cream. The texture isn’t too far off either. While it’s more reminiscent of frozen yogurt, the amount of creaminess is remarkable. I’m not sure if I should be fascinated or terrified by how far food science has come. Either way, I have to give props to Blue Bunny.
You can see that things start looking better with the top layer removed. As for taste, that’s pretty darn good as well. You’re not going to believe me but the base tastes like vanilla cake batter! It’s very sweet to be sure but it is a spot on representation of vanilla cake batter. There’s no noticeable presence of artificial sweeteners (to me) so that’s a big plus.
The fudge swirl, on the other hand doesn’t share the same fate. There’s no mistaking that its sugar free. Sure you can taste some decent quality chocolate but it becomes cloying fast. Also ice cream companies, stop calling your syrup swirl fudge! You’re not fooling anyone.
Last but not least are the brownies, oh the brownies. How these things have no fat is beyond me. They’re no Greyston Bakery but these little gems are chewy and moist. I really can’t distinguish these from most other brownies you find in ice cream to be honest. Heck, they’re better than the majority I have sampled. They make this flavor hard to put down when all you want to do is keep digging for more. Be fair warned though, excess consumption of sugar alcohols can lead to “tummy troubles” and you could end up bloated like me after a few servings. Thankfully that was the full extent of my problems but people who are more sensitive should take caution. Even at 90 calories a serving, you need to have some self-control here.
I have to say, Blue Bunny has made my journey into this segment of ice cream a pleasant one. I might just have to try others in their Sweet Freedoms line. If you have any requests, be sure to leave them in the comments!
Verdict? A pleasant surprise
Buy Again? If I can practice restraint when hunting for the brownies, yes.
I tried Turkey Hill's fat-free, sugar-free Vanilla Bean ice cream a couple of weeks ago for the first time and I was amazed by awesome it was. It resembled regular ice cream so much that I would never have known it was both sugar-free and fat-free if it was not printed on the container. You might want to give it a shot sometime.
ReplyDeleteNick, the diabetic in my family is so happy with you right now! After she read this review she begged me to get this for her. The only place I could find it locally was in a Walmart about ten miles away.
ReplyDeleteShe met me at the door with a spoon.
She just loved it and I thought it was very good as well. Since it's no sugar added as opposed to sugar free she only gets a small amount but she wanted you to know it has been deemed insulin worthy!
Thanks for reviewing this one . She is excited that you will take requests and review other diabetic friendly options.
Beth
P.S. She wishes you a Happy St. Patricks's Day and thinks you should eat some green ice cream.
Anon, that's beyond awesome! You have no idea how much her enjoyment from my review means to me. Glad to hear she enjoyed the flavor as well. If there's any flavors out there she wnats reviewed, don't hesitate to leave a comment or shoot me an email: nickrovo [at] gmail [dot] com. As for the green ice cream, I'm still hesitant of that color but I think I'll be having something minty to celebrate!
