Dunkin Donuts Extra Thick Shakes, Mix-ins, and Coolatta Floats!
Mix-ins are either Oreo or M&Ms
Shakes are Coffee, Chocolate or Vanilla
Coolatta floats are Coffee, Strawberry and Orange
(and we've got traditional soft serve cones)
As always, On Second Scoop has done some digging, and this has unearthed two little factoids. 1) The coolatta float currently exists in New Zealand (and uses the exact same image). 2) I found an ad poster from 2010 displaying 5 flavors of limited edition coolatta floats, though I have yet to dig up a press release nor do I remember these.
Here it is.... and I'm thinking I should have asked for a spoon because it's literally just soft serve poured on top of half of a small coolatta. I expected this, but see, as you are probably suspecting right now, when you stick your straw in, you get coolatta, nothing more. You can't suck soft serve through a straw, it's just not going to happen. And it's not like an icy cold coolatta is going to be in a rush to melt the soft serve so that the two of them can mix. To be honest, I was kind of hoping for something more like an Icee Float, so let's see what we can do.
Ahhhh, ok, talk about a hand spun treat. This picture is about half way through four or five minutes of trying to mix this thing together to the point where I could easily drink it on the way home. It's not bad and more or less tastes like you would expect. I'm kind of torn right now because I think it tastes better mixed, but at the same time, you'll never realize it's two separate things if they mix it for you.
See, when I had the icee float, you could move your straw between the icee and the milk shake and it was just a fun experience. It's the game of getting the best mix of the two flavors while still enjoying each on it's own. Here, I don't have that choice. It's not bad, I'm not saying that, but I think I worked a little too hard to enjoy this beverage. Part of me would rather see this served as a sundae where the coolatta is used like strawberry topping (yes, I know the consistency wouldn't be perfect, but it would be fun scooping the two together).
Verdict? definitely novel (and summer-y)
Buy Again? yeah, I can't help myself
Notes: if you spy this treat, let us know! Hopefully they all have the big sign in the window so the test stores are easy to find. I saw at least one twitter user who spied it in New York. Happy Hunting!
I remembering seeing these products at a Dunkin' Donuts in Falmouth in maybe 2009 or 2010... was so disappointed when I never saw them again!
