Gelato Fiasco Torched Marshmallow S'mores Gelato
Now please sit down because what I'm about to say is something you rarely hear on the site. This gelato is one of the greatest frozen desserts I have ever encountered in my life. I'm having a hard time deciding where to start talking about this amazing flavor.
I've already said how perfect Gelato Fiasco's texture is so I'll save you from re-reading that. Just know that it's just as authentic here as it was in Cookie Therapy. The flavor of the base though is remarkable. You know how I love Stewart's Crumbs Along the Mohawk and that graham cracker base, right? Well this base makes that one seem like vanilla. Heck, I’m pretty sure I heard CAtM crying when I passed by it last time I went to get gas. The graham cracker flavor is strong and undeniably a replica of a fresh graham cracker. I even went as far as to open up a box of graham crackers to compare the two. I'd be damned if they didn't taste exactly alike giving the gelato the upper hand with it being frozen creamy perfection.
The base's flavor would be enough for anyone but GF went and added CHUNKS of graham crackers to the mix. There are crumbs in the mix but these chunks rival that of other companies chocolate chips at times. They not only add more texture but amplify the grahaminess of the overall product.
Next you run into the chocolate shards that are littered throughout the pint. While they're not going to blow your mind, they're not any of that cheap garbage you find in other brands. This is some quality milk chocolate we have here and it works well with the honey vibe the graham components are bringing.
What takes this flavor to a whole other level are the toasted marshmallows. I'm typically with Dubba in not liking mini marshmallows in a dessert and would much rather have swirls. That's not the case here because I want these marshmallows in every S'mores flavor from now on. Being that they're torched, they basically hold little resistance to your spoon and bring that gooeyness you'd expect from a swirl. The texture is just phenomenal but the flavor is downright epic. If they weren't suspended in gelato, I'd be darned if I didn't torch the marshmallows myself over a campfire. They're what turn this dessert into an all-out S'mores lovers fantasy. Really, I was at a loss for words when I encountered my first one. They're just that good.
Everything about this flavor is remarkable. With all of the flavors combined, this is the closest thing you'll get to an actual S'mores in a frozen dessert. If Graeter's Buckeye Blitz is my #1 frozen dessert of all time, this is #1a. There's nothing I'd want to change about this gelato at all. My only problem is that I ate the whole pint in one sitting and it's not refilling itself like I had foolishly hoped it would.
Now remember how I told you to get your keys? Well I want you to go to The Gelato Fiasco's store locator, find the closest store that carries them and go buy this gelato now. If no one carries them around you, go to your favorite store and demand they start carrying them now! If that doesn't work, make a trip to one of their stores in Maine and get yourself some asap. It would be a crime for anyone not to be able to experience the sheer bliss that I did.
Verdict? Stop reading this and get yourself some now!
Buy Again? *drives to The Fresh Market*
Dubba's 2016 Note: I finally got my paws on this flavor as Gelato Fiasco is now readily available at Stop & Shop, and it's even on sale now and then too. While it's a beautiful looking flavor, it didn't click for me like it did for Nick. Like many of your comments pointed out, the base was just a bit too intense for me. I adore graham but this almost has a pumpkin spice vibe to it. This will be adored by many, but not necessarily all of us.
Dubba's 2017 Note: Gelato Fiasco decided to retool this flavor for 2017. Nick and I have talked about it and the short story is that he likes it less now and I like it more. The boldness is gone and replaced with something more pleasant and sweet. I would have no trouble polishing off this pint now while Nick is left longing for the old formula. It just goes to show you that we are all different!
My thoughts exactly! Gelato Fiasco is quickly becoming my favorite brand of frozen desserts, neck and neck with Jeni's, and cheaper too!
ReplyDeleteAnon, I'd say they're better than Jeni's and way more consistent. I've tried 3 pints of Jeni's (review to come of another) and have been let down by two of them. I've tried 3 pints of Gelato Fiasco and each one has been a major success.
ReplyDeleteI'm def gonna search this one out - even the name is epic!
ReplyDeleteDanielle, find it. eat it. enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteBig praise here as a top 2 placement for you, curious how would the top 5 round out?
ReplyDeleteThis looks awesome as I love just about anything s'mores. Though Jeni's has been torching marshmallows in her delicious sweet potato ice cream several years, I can agree they're amazing!
ReplyDeleteAnon #2, that's tough since it really depends on what mood I'm in. Here's a quick list of what popped into my mind.
ReplyDelete1: Graeter's Buckeye Blitz
2: Gelato Fiasco S'mores
3: Ben & Jerry's Cinnamon Buns
4: Gelato Fiasco Cookie Therapy
5: Steve's Sunday Morning
Everything is subject to change since I have to be in the mood for a certain flavor and all that.
bobcatsteph3, I really want to try that flavor but the price tag kills me every time. Maybe I'll cave in and buy a pint when it's available again.
Have you had the Graeter's cnc? Just seeing if you do in fact like the cookie therapy over it. Would love to get the Buckeye Blitz and cnc in Manhattan but alas.
ReplyDeleteAnon #2(I think), I haven't had Graeter's version but I really can't see that surpassing Gelato Fiasco's version While Graeter's vanilla is good, unlike Dubba, I don't think it's the best. That said, I'm sure Graeter's version is awesome but no one carries it around me so I can't find out.
ReplyDeleteNick, have you ever tried Purity's O'Charley's Caramel Pie Ice Cream?
ReplyDeleteBy far the greatest I have ever tried.
I have tried the flavors you listed, and this blows those flavors out of the water!
Anon #3?, Purity isn't located in my area but that flavor sounds pretty good.
ReplyDeleteI went to Fresh Market today with this very ice cream in mind, only to see an empty space where they would be in the freezer. But hark! One of the employees retrieved one from the back for me! Excelsior!
ReplyDeleteI like it and would buy it again, but I can't help but to feel a bit let down.
* The graham cracker taste is very intense, which would be good, except it seemed really cinnamony. A little disconcerting when you're going for s'more.
* The chocolate was tasty enough. But here's the thing: Most people with full control of their mental facilities will attest, dark chocolate beats milk eight days a week. BUT if you're trying to replicate a s'more, chunks of Hershey is going to get you there a lot more reliably than xx% cacao dark shards.
* The marshmallows are a bit of a letdown, because a) there's not that many, and b) they tasted and felt more like meringue bits than marshmallow.
I actually did like it! I'd probably go 7.5, 8 of 10. But Graeter's peppermint stick is still my No. 1.
Gave this a whirl after two failed attempts at finding it. Initial impression... unimpressed. Found very few hunks of marshmallow and did not see or taste any of that delicious char. I did notice the homemade quality of the marshmallows, but no texture or taste related to torching. I'll keep digging and hope for the best.
ReplyDeleteAlso... needs more chocolate.
Anon #4, that intense graham cracker taste is what i fell in love with but I didn't get any cinnamon flavor from it. The chocolate wasn't all that dark to either. Lastly, I'm saddened to hear your lack of marshmallows. Mine had that distant campfire toastiness and were quite prevalent.
ReplyDeleteAJ W, do your marshmallows look like mine in the photos? That's a shame yours aren't like mine flavorwise either.
Nick, they don't have any discoloration around them to suggest they were exposed to any sort of flame. The off-white color of the gelato and the specks of chocolate and graham are prevalant. Had two servings of it so far and I'm fairly underwhelmed overall.
ReplyDeleteToo much cinnamon.
ReplyDeleteBut I liked the thought.
Will purchase one more time with hope there is less of a cinnamon taste.
On 2nd try there were more marshmallows and the texture was more in line to how I thought it should be.
ReplyDeleteIt was perfect.
I let my sister try it and she loved it.
My top gelato right now
Joneable, I'm glad you had a better experience the second time around!
ReplyDeleteTry Giffords Smore Ice cream... much cheaper for the amount you get and it's DELICIOUS.
ReplyDeletehehehehe, it is quite tasty, isn't it? http://www.onsecondscoop.com/2014/01/giffords-campfire-smores-ice-cream.html
ReplyDeleteTried this today...Just awful! Probably some of the worst gelato I've ever had. Tasted like nothing but cinnamon - Which I can't stand.
ReplyDeleteIt was good. Not great. The little Marshmellows did not seem like they were toasted.....it would have been better with Marshmellow swirl.
ReplyDeleteSorry I can't agree with your enthusiasm for this flavor. I was excited to read about it and even more excited to actually find this at The Fresh Market. It seems that someone forgot to torch my marshmallows and had a heavy hand with the cinnamon! No apparent graham flavor and the consistency was grainy. Too bad I can't get my $ back. I posted a similar comment to the Gelato Fiasco website.
ReplyDeleteMy comment from yesterday has yet to be posted but I wanted to follow up. I mentioned that I contacted Gelato Fiasco company and wonder of wonders, I received a swift reply and they are refunding my $7.99!! Now that's customer service.
ReplyDelete[too hot to moderate comments yesterday]
ReplyDeleteYeah, that's why I put my foot note on this one, I don't think it's meant for everyone. Glad GF wrote back to you, they're good people.
I agree with previous review regarding Purity O'Charley's Caramel Pie ice cream. Best ever!
