Dairy Queen Reese's Extreme Blizzard
Reese's Peanut Butter Cups & Reese's Pieces Candy mixed with
Peanut Butter & Chocolaty Topping, all blended in soft serve
Peanut Butter & Chocolaty Topping, all blended in soft serve
I take a few bites and I like it. I was never worried that I wouldn't like it, instead this review was always meant to gauge how much I like it.
I think that the biggest point of note here should be the salt factor. There is a distinctly salty vibe to the aftertaste, something you don't really notice with a regular Reese's peanut butter cup blizzard. This blizzard is more about the peanut butter topping flavor. Texture wise it seems to be about the chopped up Reese's Pieces.
The pb cups just weren't a factor in this particular serving. As always, keep in mind that every blizzard is different, but for me, the pb cups, and in particular the chocolate balance they could have provided, is not here. At one point I wondered if they should have added some chocolate chips, but then I was concerned that their chocolate would vary too much from the chocolate that surrounds a pb cup.
At another point I wondered if maybe peanuts would be an interesting addition to this blizzard. We've already got the flavor and the saltiness of them, so why not add some extra crunch factor too.
This is one of those blizzards that's pretty easy to slow scoop. Since the flavor is pretty potent, you don't need a ton on your spoon. You can take a small bite and just sit there and enjoy the fact that springtime is upon us.
So, did I like it? Yes. Did I love it? My mind wasn't blown, but I am sitting somewhere between like and love at the moment. This is in part because I'm still debating how I feel about this salty aftertaste. It's already been twenty minutes and I can still totally taste this blizzard. (Yes I could eat a cookie or something but I'm pretty full right now). I like when things have plenty of flavor, I just don't know if I want a little more balance... I will probably try this one again before the month is done, I'm just not sure if I will get it with the vanilla softserve again or try it with a chocolate base (or better yet a chocolate and vanilla swirl to keep everything in check).
Note #1: As with all blizzard reviews, your experience may vary greatly from store to store
Verdict? salty, peanut buttery
Buy Again? pretty sure I will
Do you think this would be better with chocolate soft serve instead of vanilla? Asking for a friend!
ReplyDeleteI posed that question at the end of the review. I'd be tempted to go with twist as the base. I've never tried a blizzard that way, but a few of our fellow ice cream fans have.
ReplyDeleteTwist would end up being a very light chocolate by the time it's blended together.
ReplyDeleteWhich would be fine I think. I want more balance but not a domination by the chocolate.
ReplyDeleteDamn I never even THOUGHT about swirling a blizzard before. Pretty next gen idea there
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if mine was done wrong, or I just can't taste it, but all I think I got was Reese's Pieces in mine. I didn't notice any PB Cups and didn't realize it was even spose to have a topping.
ReplyDeleteSo I'm pretty sure they didn't make mine correct. I didn't care for the Reese's pieces (don't like the hard candies in my ice cream), so probably won't try another.
DQ is known to mess things up, if you didnt ask for it precisely and they didnt here you precisely, they could have easily messed up and given you a regular reeses blizzard. Who knows with DQ! If you don't like hard candy in ice cream you probably should avoid any and all that include M&M's or Reese's Pieces.
