Hey everyone, it's question time. Pineapple or licorice in an ice cream flavor can be pretty strange, but having them in the same pint can only end badly right?
Cold Case Ice Cream: Medellin Madness
I'm not gonna lie, that's a great complex opening shot.
That's not cookies or brownies... that's blue cornbread!
I am afraid, but I also think that I'm in the mood for something different.... and something different is what I get! The first thing that strikes you is the sweetness of it all, and then after that bit of sweet shock wears off you start thinking "hey, wait, this is nothing like what I expected!"
I do not like pineapple in general, let alone in my ice cream, and licorice? Yeah, I tried that once. Just once. Can I taste either directly here? Not really! There is so much complex flavor going on that your brain just goes in to "need to scoop more" mode. Wow, color me impressed (Again!).
I don't think this one topples their Raspberry Zodiac as the best pint in the evidence box, but it makes a very strong case to be tied or come in second by just a smidge. Man, whoever designed these flavors knows what they are doing.
The "brown sugar spiced cornbread" is probably the star of the show... I think anyway. The quality of the cornbread is just top notch. I wish all cornbread mix-ins were like this (cough)Van Leeuwan(cough). The fact that it's "blue" (close to black) is interesting too.
Again, I like the sweetness of it all, but there's a great complexity to the flavor to balance out that sweetness. It's not sweet just to be sweet, it all fits together.
What else? I haven't hit any pineapple chunks, though I don't mind that.
I think this flavor would be the hardest to analyze if you played the cold case ice cream guessing game. The way everything interacts would throw everyone for a loop. I've literally reviewed over 2000 ice creams and I don't know if I would guess any of the components on this one.... like a lemon butterscotch swirl? I probably would have guessed some kind of toffee vibe which isn't super far off, but definitely not the same.
The only thing I will point out is that there is a bit of (peculiar?) sensation to eating this ice cream. I don't want to say weird, but there is definitely some kind of food interaction thing going on.
Alright, wow, thank you for impressing me yet again cold case. I know my sample was free, and I know the price point is bothering a lot of you, but man if this isn't another excellent pint of ice cream. Well done!
On Second Scoop: Wow, it's just as impressive on the second try. I did detect the pineapple this time, but not in a bad way. Major kudos for this unique combo. I can't believe they got me to like a pineapple flavor.... man, I want a six pack of just this and raspberry zodiac now.
Verdict? declious
