Are you ready?

Ok, why is this one so very potent? Like I almost did a spit take that I was so shocked at how the flavors came right at me. This is not what I think of when I imagine a fresh and tasty jelly donut. Let's break it down.

One, why did they go with a potent custard base? If they were trying to make a vanilla custard filled donut, then this would make sense, but in a jelly donut?

Two, why is the raspberry so potent? I'm glad it's flavorful, but it doesn't need to hit my tastebuds over the head with a giant tart hammer. Ok, that makes no sense, but this is not the jelly you would find in the donut.

Three, I think I would be less biased if I hadn't discovered the very tasty raspberry filled donuts down at Market32 (Price Chopper). They don't go with powder sugar and instead go with a nice sugary glaze. Man, when those donuts are fresh (and with a slight cool temperature to them), they are very good. That's what I imagined when I dove in to this pint.

I fought the urge to quit through the first several scoops and eventually had myself a decent size serving. It didn't so much grow on me as just startle me less... but don't think that potentcy went away.

Oh wait, number four, what's up with there being cinnamon dough bits in this one? Are they trying to merge all the donut varieties in to one donut ice cream? I just don't get this flavor... especially when I compare it to how a raspberry swirl was used in that recent cold case ice cream review.

I'm out for now, maybe this free sample will click more next time.

On Second Scoop: This is still Jeni's, so I did find myself continuing to scoop despite not appreciating the potency of this flavor. I guess I still don't understand it. It's flavorful and a quality product, but I wanted something that tasted more like donuts and less like whatever this is (I want to say it's something akin to a strong cream cheese flavored ice cream, but that's not right either). One final thought: the majority of the donut crumble is solid and somewhat dry, but other bits are soft and squishy. Not sure why.
