[New for 2023] So Haagen-Dazs doesn't really have any new ice cream flavors for us this year (I assume next year they will ofcourse), but they do have these new items in the yogurt aisle. Is it genius or folly? I'm not too worried, but let's dig in and find out!
Haagen-Dazs Cultured Creme
vanilla bean - strawberry - black cherry - blueberry
Black Cherry first.... because cherry. It's kind of my default to start with cherry or strawberry or raspberry. Ok, I like it. It's not tangy, it's rich, it's creamy and best of all, I kind of think it has an ice cream vibe. At least enough of a vibe to remind me of haagen-dazs ice cream.
Vanilla next because I'm boring! Hehehehehe. I actually really like the vanilla and will definitely be buying this again. It's more vanilla cream than vanilla yogurt. HD did not skimp on the flavoring and I love that. Totally worth the $2 in my mind. Vanilla takes me to a happy place, I can't help it.
Strawberry next because I burned out on blueberry things many years ago. I would say that this one is fine. It's probably the chalkiest of the three I tried, though the bar is pretty low here for chalkiness. In other words, this one tastes the most like yogurt to me. I wouldn't mind a bit more strawberry flavoring, though if I remember right, their strawberry ice cream isn't super strawberry either. So, yeah, this one is fine, but it's currently ranked at 3 out of 3 for me.
Last one is blueberry... and I don't love it, but I didn't think I would anyway. It makes me think of little blueberry mini muffins. To put it another way, there is a weird aftertaste on this one that I do not appreciate (and keep in mind, the ingredient list is quite short on these, so it might just be me).
Final ranking: Vanilla, Cherry, Strawberry, Blueberry. Vanilla was the tastiest and only Cherry really made me think of their ice cream. I'll probably pick up a couple of vanilla and maybe a cherry next time we're at Hannaford, and if I had to guess, I'll probably try mixing a cherry with a vanilla at some point.
There is also a coffee flavor (which Hannaford had) and a lemon flavor (which they didn't have). Hmmmm, I think I'm locked in enough to try that lemon flavor.... oh, might be good with graham and whipped cream.
Note: I did take pictures of the cremes, but it basically looks like every other yogurt you've ever seen. Well, the vanilla looks pretty cool with all the vanilla bean flakes, but everything else just looks like yogurt. There weren't really any big fruit chunks to speak of in any of these.
Verdict? respectable
Buy Again? yup
This has absolutely zero appeal to me. I dont understand it, I dont know why its needed and I dont know who the target market is. Im guessing that since there’s been no comments in 2 days, Im not alone in this.
ReplyDeleteAs a yogurt hater, I say this is needed. It's needed when you can't have ice cream, such as the office or school. It's needed when you are serving a healthy yogurt breakfast and you don't want the kids to know you hate yogurt. It's needed as a quick trick for dessert. It would be great served over the various fruits so you don't have to whip real cream. It's needed because I love it! I've only tried the coffee but that was good enough. Do I wish it was healthier? Yes, but then it would be yogurt and I wouldn't eat it.
DeleteWhy you mad bro?
ReplyDeleteI agree with Anonymous. Is this different from any of the other yogurts in the market? Disappointing HD! At least make the flavors Haagen Daz ice cream inspired...pineapple coconut, rum raisin, dulce de leche...
ReplyDeleteDefinitely seems like a missed opportunity
ReplyDelete(and I was just teasing the first Anon)
Lol, dubba! Never mad at you. Just annoyed with Haagen Daz for not expending effort where they should be. Stay with the core product and wow us with new flavors. ///// anon #1
ReplyDeleteWe love you Dubba scoops! -anon #2
ReplyDeleteI think IF these become a sales success, THEN HD will go into more daring flavors. But out the chute with Vanilla, Strawberry, Cherry, Lemon, Blueberry and Coffee is probably a pretty good way to get pretty much everybody interested in at least one of the flavors. Maybe a chocolate base instead of two red fruits?
ReplyDeleteDefinitely most interested in trying the vanilla.
As a yogurt and ice cream fiend, I tried all the flavors. did not care for any of this line. Not as indulgent as yogurts like Nosa, Ellenos, Zoi, etc. Nor anything really like ice cream either. and pricing for 4oz is crazy. These would have to be on sale for closer to $1 to be even somewhat worth it. Don't see thee making it in market long term. We shall see.
ReplyDeleteI put the vanilla bean (froze it first) in the ninja and added fresh a banana and some strawberries. Made an awesome shake.
ReplyDeleteThis yogurt is absolutely delicious! Very creamy! Can't wait till they make chocolate!!
ReplyDeleteI just tried the Black Cherry and it was hands down better tasting than any yogurt I have ever had. It was so good!
ReplyDeleteGuess what! These are NOT yogurt. The label says "cultured creme" and try as I might I have been unable to see where this product has any probiotics as yogurt does. Don't get me wrong, it's delicious and has a wonderful texture but if consumers are looking for yogurt this isn't it. It seems a bit deceiving to merchandise this product with the yogurt because many folks eat yogurt for the health benefits and not just the flavor. At 200 calories per container I'm gonna opt for real yogurt to get the probiotics I actually eat yogurt for. Don't be fooled by General Mills.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering about that, if it doesn’t have any probiotics then it’s really just eating a delicious serving of cream at 200 calories. Couldn’t they have made it some way to include probiotics? Now I am not feeling so good about eating it.
DeleteTo be fair, I removed the word yogurt in a few spots (like the name of the product). I saw cultured in the ingredients and probably thought "close enough". I think the sticking point is that the FDA makes you differentiate between "yogurt" and "cultured product", kind of like how "frozen dairy dessert" isn't "ice cream". So it has bacteria, but not those bacteria that make yogurt officially be yogurt.
ReplyDeleteGood Info, Dubba!! That's exactly why I read every word on the container, but didn't know what "cultured cream" meant.
DeleteAs far as flavor....I lost all taste over 2 years ago EXCEPT vinegar, salt, sugar and lemon. I've learned that I cannot taste lemon flavoring, but I CAN taste true/real lemon. I buy the lemon HD cultured cream whenever I can find it. YUM!
Not too hard to taste good with so much sugar
ReplyDeleteThese are the best yogurts on the market previously my favorite was liberte yogurt. I will be attempting to make these at home using a starter right out of theirs. If it works well and is good I will drop the end product in an ice cream machine.
ReplyDeleteI only buy the coffee flavor because Haggendaaz coffee ice cream is soooo nostalgic for me and i'm a sucker for a new thing. But yea, I have been searching EVERYWHERE for any word on what cultures are used in this product but have found a lacto or a strepto anywhere.
ReplyDeletei'd love to buy these regularly, and I recently wanted to drop them off with a care package for a sick friend because probiotics. But I think they might just be a dessert. which is fine, i guess. Just a little less shiny.
Tried the coffee one. Absolutely delicious - my wife & I thought it was better then their coffee ice cream. This is not a yogurt product but uses creme fraiche as a base. It has a thick, appealing texture similar to Greek yougurt with a decent coffee flavor. It is sweet and full of calories (200 per 4 oz.) so I will treat it as a somewhat expensive treat.
ReplyDeleteDee. When I first saw it, I wondered why they moved the small cups of ice cream with the yogurts. Then realized it wasn't ice cream, but it didn't say yogurt either. Didn't try it at first because of price, but since it's Haagen dazs, why not. If it's half as good as their ice cream, then it's worth the price. Love, Love the vanilla. Taste is creamy, not overly sweet and just delicious. I tried the coffee flavor, don't know why since I don't like coffee, only the smell of it. Sticking with vanilla. I'm lactose intolerant, but I can eat these as long as I don't over indulge, which is sometimes easy to do. Vanilla Haagen dazs cultured cream, my new favorite rich, creamy dessert.
