State of the Freezer Address - 16 Years!


It's hard to believe, but the blog is now old enough to apply for a learner's permit! Alright, let's talk about what's in the freezers and then we'll go from there.


So here is the upstairs (kitchen) freezer right now. Tillamook has become our default ice cream these days, because it's actual ice cream. There's a container of Strawberry Tillamook behind the cookie dough.

There's actually five non-dairy pints in the upstairs freezer right now. Two are for my son (like the chocolate sorbetto), and then the others are for the blog. He's still not really in to frozen treats, but we keep them around for when the mood strikes.

The Haagen-Dazs was an on sale treat (because this is still my favorite non-seasonal flavor from them). As for the Edy's, I feel bad about how they are kind of a non-factor these days, though maybe it's better in other parts of the country. Hopefully the churro flavor is at least amusing.


Downstairs used to be where I hid all the good stuff, but all too often now, it's just a limbo for ice cream. On the left (in plastic), are two pints from Jeni's (from last year), and the plastic wrapped pint on the right is the mango lime flavor from Cold Case ice cream. It's a bit embarrassing, but I just don't have that drive to cycle through flavors like I used to. Plus I don't have Nick or my daughter to help go through stuff, though there are a few containers hiding on the other side of the freezer waiting for my daughter to get back from college.

Between being older (and less energetic), to finding less joy in what is offered these days, it's hard to churn through the reviews like I used to. I can still really enjoy an ice cream, but I feel like those freezer aisle powered moments are fewer and farther between then they used to be.

One thing I do do a lot of these days is mix my ice creams. I think I did it before my daughter started doing it these last few years, but I wonder if she kind of inspired me to do it more. I often do something like layer a Tillamook flavor with say a Ben & Jerry's flavor. One flavor can bring the texture while the other brings the flavor. In my mind, I wind up with something that reminds me of the better days of ice cream. I'm not saying that there isn't great ice cream out there, but you are less and less likely to find it in the ice cream aisle. Nope, still being too negative. How about this? Modern Premium ice cream is more like mainstream ice cream from 25 years ago, and mainstream ice cream is more like budget friendly ice cream from 25 years ago. 

The (funny?) thing about it is that it's all about perspective. A 20-something year old probably has a much different perspective than a 40-something year old. Heck, today's teens have always been exposed to frozen dairy dessert. Pop quiz: how many of you don't remember half gallons of ice cream? Scary thought for the rest of us, right? Now, get off my lawn!

Ha, just kidding! So what's in store for the next year? Who knows! I will try to keep up with posting once a week, but working from home will continue to cut in to what I can review. Me and the Mrs. have been mixing in more ice cream dates, but I know those local reviews are only so exciting (though I may mix them in on occasion). Oh, how does everyone feel about news only posts? I prefer to do reviews, but there are times when a news post makes more sense.

  3. I'm glad to see HD's White chocolate raspberry in the freezer. That's my all time favorite! These days I seem to buy only Friendly's, HD, and TH when it's on sale. It's the only thing that resembles ice cream to my palate. I can't believe it's been 16 years! Although when I first read your blog it was on my laptop when I lived at my moms house. Now it's from my cell phone, having owned my house for 16 years with a 7 year old dog. So time really does fly!

  7. I’ve been reading your blog since at least 2013… Incredible how fast time flies! I also found as I’ve been getting older that I get less & less excited about ice creams, but perhaps it’s the subpar products being released to the market. Ben & Jerry’s used to release flavors as creative as Jeni’s. Now it’s just reworking the same 10 or so flavor components.

    Reader reviews
    Reader alerts on now products on shelves

    I think both would bolster traffic and make engagement knowing you have limited time and products are as enticing for you.

    1. definitely not opposed to doing more "news" posts. As for reader reviews, I'm all about consistency when it comes to reviews. I'd want one or two regular reviewers, but it's hard to pin someone down. People say they want to do it, but then they realize it's a bunch of work and they have to pay for their own ice cream, and then it's not as exciting as they thought it would be :)

    1. not sure if that's sarcasm or satire.

      no, it's not a 9x5 job, but to properly analyze an ice cream and write about it, plus take decent photos and prep them for the blog, does take some time, more than many expect. It's more than five minutes.

    3. I haven't timed it in awhile, but let's say an hour or so. Measure from the time you pull the treat from the freezer, take a bunch of decent photos, sample the ice cream while writing up a first draft, turn that draft in to a rough full post, pick the best photos and then crop them, insert the photos in to the post, get the rough post in to it's final form, verify that the post preview looks ok and tweak as necessary, sleep on the post, review the first scooping and write up the second scoop, then finally post it. It's more than five minutes of work.

  13. I did not know the best place to put my comment so I went with the most "general" post I could find. Apparently Whole Foods has all ice cream half price through July 16th (maybe for National I ce cream month?) I had tried the 365 organic mint in the past but this time tried the regular 365 (not organic) mint and it is soooo good. As is the chocolate. I have pretty much limited myself to Breyers for a few years (I still like the few flavors that are still actual ice cream)but these are better. Creamy, dense, excellent flavor, and the fun, flaky chips in the mint. I got but have not yet tried the sandwiches and some pops and I'd like to try the fudge bars.
