Turkey Hill Barbie "Ice Cream"

[New for August 2024] Have you seen the new "Late Night" (faux) pints from Turkey Hill yet? I haven't, but I was surprised to find these two hiding in the freezer end cap. You all know I'm not a fan of frozen dairy dessert, but since these are probably limited edition, maybe I should bring one home...

Frosted Cupcake: cupcake swirled with pink icing
Strawberry Marshmallow: strawberry swirled with marshmallow

I've been eating a lot of strawberry ice cream recently, so I decided to try that one first. If it's good, I'll try the other. If it isn't, I've saved myself a few bucks.

smells good

but the taste...

Wow it only took a few bites to go from "maybe this wont be too bad" to "yeah, I don't like this".

The strawberry hits you first, but then everything else kicks in, and I just don't like it.

I guess I should have went with the cupcake one? No, I just should have left them both be.

Yeah, I'm getting too old to mess with this kind of junk, so I mixed it with some Turkey Hill all natural vanilla and it tastes less offensive now. There is still some weirdness going on, it's just diluted weirdness now.

Now compare that experience to say mixing Tillamook Strawberry with all natural vanilla which makes for a great afternoon snack.

I guess this is just my yearly reminder that I don't really like regular Turkey Hill ice cream anymore.

On Second Scoop: It's trash day, and guess what's in the trash? I'll be honest, when people say they throw food away and I think it's a decent product, I don't really believe them, but on the other hand, even I do throw "ice cream" away on occasion. In particular, I've decided to throw this out before I take the trash to the curb. A commenter mentioned I wasn't specific enough on the first scooping, so here goes my excuse for my actions: We've seen before where an odd swirl can throw off the entire balance of an ice cream, and I think that's what happened here. When you take the food science of a frozen dairy dessert that's not that good to begin with, and then add in a "cheap" swirl, they combine to kind of ruin every bite. FDD has a inherit "meh" factor to it's flavoring and texture, and the wrong swirl amplifies the "meh" to an "ewwww, no thank you". I hope that clarifies my position for any newer readers. As always, if you disagree, please leave your thoughts in the comments!

Verdict?  too fake (and too sweet maybe?)

  1. I just saw this in my Shoprite circular and when I looked into it, I realized it was FDD- Automatic no from me! Ever since the new company took over TH, their FDD is inedible. There are only a few premium ice cream flavors I purchase from them anymore. A real shame considering they used to be my fav brand 😔

  2. I was so curious about these. Thanks for taking one for the team.

I agree with you that TH has gone downhill. I used to buy their products regularly. They even had fun collabs and unique flavors back then - 8-10 years ago ;(

  3. "but then everything else kicks in, and I just don't like it." What does that mean? I think you need to start fleshing out your reviews and get more specific.

    1. You are correct in that I should explain more for the random people who show up to the blog, but if you've been around for a bit, you would know that I just don't have a whole lot to say about frozen dairy dessert anymore. Occasionally it's tolerable, but to me, it's just not worth my time, and that frustration then reflects in how much effort I spend on elaborating that it's not good.
