[New for 2025] ...whoa, I just wrote "New for 2025".... crazy.... but yeah, I'm actually pretty stoked to be ice cream hunting this year. The last few years have been pretty boring, and I know I'm not going to enjoy everything headed our way, but it just feels more.... normal? We're supposed to get wound up for a new ice cream season in January. It's kind of a lost tradition. So, knowing that my local Shaw's had already started clearing shelf space, I ran to see what I could find early in the morning, and yeah, I found one of the things that I was most excited for!
Fat Boy Cinnamon Churro Sandwich
vanilla ice cream with a sea salt caramel core sandwiched between two cinnamon churro cookies
I know it's four fluid ounces (or 98g) which is a solid sized treat, but it just looks small here. Also, why is the picture of the sandwich blurry?
Part of me is always tempted to unwrap all four sandwiches and photograph the best one, but that would be wasteful (in the sense that I would have to eat all of the sandwiches sooner rather than later). It's not bad looking, but it's not super impressive either, so let's jump to the taste testing.
Mmmmm, yeah, I like it, but with caveats. So the caramel runs through the sandwich, and those are by far the best bites. Like I wish there was caramel in every bite because the caramel with the churro cookie is a real winner.
And now the caveat. I'm pretty sure it could be me, but as I've gotten older, cinnamon treats seem to be more and more spicy. I feel like these cookies have a little cinnamon kick to them. I say it this way because I feel like more and more products have gone from a sweet cinnamon vibe to a spicy cinnamon vibe. I used to adore those little bite sized cinnamon rolls from the grocery store, but I don't buy them anymore because they feel spicy rather than sweet. Am I crazy, or have others noticed this?
Anyway, yeah, there's a bit of cinnamon kick while you are eating this which is why I really appreciated the caramel kicking in. Also, when you are done, that cinnamon kick is going to linger on your taste buds. I did not love that fact. Again, maybe it's just me being older, but I would have loved this to roll a different way.
Actually, just so you don't think I am totally crazy, the ingredients of the cookies include spices and then cinnamon, so it may not just be my imagination.
So, there ya go, the first new review of 2025. Shaw's didn't have all four new Fat Boy treats, but I will keep my eyes open for them as well as all the other new stuff that's out there. It's gonna be a fun year!
On Second Scoop: I think I liked it more on the second try. Tweaked expectations are always helpful for a treat that you mostly like. I do still technically wish that it was a bit more of a sweet cinnamon kick maybe via a a cool cinnamon sugar coating, but this is a solid offering that spices up the typical ice cream sandwich offerings. Oh, and one more thing that maybe someone who tries these can confirm. So there are these vertical ribbons of caramel in the sandwich, and I enjoy them very much, but I have a suspicion that the cookie gets a little extra crunchy were it meets the caramel. Maybe it's just my box, but let me know if you notice this too.
Verdict? a solid treat!
Buy Again? probably!
Buy Again? probably!
I see the Nightingale ice cream sandwiches were just released at Kroger. I've had mixed luck with those....they are expensive so some have sat around so long at the local grocery store that they tasted freezer burned. And they are smaller than these Fat Boy ones. This one above wouldn't be my pick, but I will try it if I can find it.
ReplyDeleteWe had that experience with the bigger sandwiches at Roche Bros, but the plan is to try the smaller sandwiches soon since they are now at Shaws.
