Top Ten Reviews of 2024

Hello! Another year is in the books as the blog crawls it's way to it's 17th anniversary in early May. The most viewed review of 2024 was actually my Cool Dog review from 2012, and that's due to Ayo Edebiri mentioning them to Seth Meyers this summer. That old review actually has more views than the top ten 2024 reviews combined!

Anyway.....   so this is my first year using the new analytics to compile the top ten list of the most viewed new reviews. It's been a bit of a learning curve, but here goes.
#10: Turkey Hill makes it's only appearance with the disgusting Barbie frozen dairy dessert. I try hard not to throw away frozen products, but this one went in the trash.

#9: Blue Bunny pops in with the fun looking Twist line up. I don't love their weird "soft" ice cream, but these pints definitely helped me hate it less.

#8: Impretzively Fudged from Ben & Jerry's sounded good, but my pint lacked any pretzel punch.

#7: Tillamook has become my favorite main stream ice cream and makes their only appearance with their Dark Chocolate Cookies & Cream flavor (the review of the new Apple Crisp flavor didn't have enough time to build up enough views to make the list)

#6: Ben & Jerry's Marshmallow Sky was one of my favorite pints this year. I bought several of these as well as several pints of Churn out the Vote.

#5: DQ makes it's only appearance with the Picnic Peach blizzard. A solid blizzard, but not necessarily one you might crave to have again. We've been hitting DQ more so it's easier to keep up with DQ reviews these days.

#4: Haagan-Dazs was pretty quiet this year, but at least we got a few new things like the New York Strawberry Cheesecake ice cream that could have used more strawberry.

#3: Friendly's makes the list with their limited edition Boston Cream Pie flavor.... that apparently I never wrote a second scoop review for. Whoopsie.

#2: Just like last year, Van Leeuwen comes in at number two with their excellent Cookie Butter flavor.

and coming with 30% more views than #2 is....

#1: Sonic's Big Scoop Cheesecake Blast got the most attention which is kind of funny considering that I hadn't written a Sonic review in six years! The review also covers the boring sundae version of the blast. I guess we need to head to Sonic more?

So what does 2025 hold in store for the blog? Well, I suspect that I wont be doing better than one review a week unless the freezer aisle magically gets more exciting again. I understand that I'm older and things seem less amusing, but at the same time, empirical evidence suggests that the freezer aisle is more boring. Companies like Talenti were silent this year, and other companies only put out a handful of products. I would suspect that we'll continue to see more cross branding (i.e. Oreo ice cream rather than Breyer's Oreo Ice Cream) and.... I don't know what else really. I wish I had won that billion dollar lottery so that I could buy one of the smaller ice cream companies and bring back the joy of mainstream ice cream. I know Tillamook isn't always amazing, but at least it's a solid ice cream still putting out new and seasonal flavors. They aren't the only ones, but between limited availability and my ability to hunt less, it's contributing to this viewpoint of the freezer aisle being boring these days. What do you think?

Fun Fact: there are 6 new products amongst the ten products shown in the current On Second Scoop page header. 5 of 6 made the top ten list! (I just checked and the new Chipwich was unfortunately fairly low on the review list)

Fun Fact #2: Apparently Tillamook overtook Turkey Hill as the #6 ice cream producer (in terms of sales) in 2023! I can only imagine that that trend continued in 2024.

  1. Congrats on the big 17, Dubba! I check in every week and thank you for always showing me something I probably overlooked in the freezer aisle. I’ll continue to visit, and you never know…if Mondelez (makers or Oreo, Tate’s, Clif bars, etc.) are using generative A.I. to create new flavors (supposedly over 70 new ones already), maybe ice cream makers will have their own “creative” spurt to spark some new products in the ol’ freezer section. Happy New Year’s, Dubba.

    1. Not sure if I should be happy or scared about that

  2. If nothing else Blue Bell consistently puts out new or recycled flavors to keep things interesting in certain markets. Talenti continues to disappoint with focusing on the layers line. We don't love B&J’s Topped lineup but that was a big drop of flavors to try.

    1. Sorry, I always forget to loop in Blue Bell since I've never had them, but thanks for reminding me. I'm sure if I lived down south that they would be my mainstream pick.

As for Talenti, did they even put out anything new this year? Last year there were the bars and dairy free stuff (including two dairy-free layered flavors), and then the pairings was the thing in 2023. I feel like layers was their 2019-2022 thing, though they do seem to make up a good chunk of what you find in the store these days.

    2. I’ll keep you updated on Blue Bell via Instagram:)

Good question on Talenti. I don’t that they have released anything new in terms of product type. They really have leaned into the Layers. It’s a let down because some of those flavors would be interesting in an an actual composed pint IMO. I truly wonder if the Layers concept is more profitable based on less actual product and the higher price point.

I should have mentioned Van Leeuwen. I’m not the biggest fan of the quality relative to price most places but they rotate flavors consistently. I’ve got a Walmart near my job now so it’s easier to check them out.

    3. Talenti released a lemon sorbet and a strawberry sorbet. I tried the lemon one, and it’s ok. But wholly uneventful overall.

    4. Grrrr, just lost the comment I typed up, let me try again:

@Anon: technically the strawberry is from 2023 (and was basically a tweak of a 2022 flavor, it even kept the same number). I assumed that the lemon was their old lemon flavor, but I'll see if I can track down a pint and check the number. --- when I went to check the number on the talenti website, I noticed *3* new "bakery collection" layered flavors. [grrrrrr, they are re-using numbers again, why are they doing that?!]

@SF: Sounds like and plan! And as for VL, part of me wants to argue that they put out too many flavors that are (figuratively) hard to keep track of. I think I'm just bitter that I've bought too many of their pints with dried out mix-ins.

    5. Wait, sorry Anon, you are technically right! The two sorbettos are Talenti's official 2024 entries, even if neither one feels truly new.
