I have a question for you: is the ice cream factory any good? It started popping up at Price Chopper last year and I was tempted, but then I saw the circle that said "now made with better ingredients" and I got a little scared.

The Ice Cream Factory Ice Cream
So who are these folks? Well, apparently these little tubs are made by the Ice Cream Factory of Missouri. They started as a scoop shop in 2019 and have expanded from there. You can find their website here. They only had 4 flavors at my Price Chopper, but the website shows 21 tasty looking flavors in all.

You know what's bugging me the most about this brand? If you look at the nutrition label quickly, you may notice it says 3 servings and then go on your happy way.... but, it's not a modern 2/3 cup serving that they are talking about, instead they are still using the old 1/2 cup serving on the label. Did you just do the math in your head? In other words, these aren't full 16oz pints or even faux 14oz pints, they are slimmed down 12 oz things (that will need a new nickname apparently).
Actually, wait, 180x3 doesn't equal 390! They should probably fix that. Anyway....
Doing a little 4/3 multiplication on the nutrition stats lets me know that this is effectively a mainstream ice cream (ala Tillamook) versus a super premium (like Ben & Jerry's). I didn't see price tags at price chopper, but one of the pictures on their social media shows these as $6 a pop. Doing some more math, that would be $8 for a full pint. So are they saying that they are as good as Jeni's or McConnell's? Wow, that's a pretty bold price point for something that is now made with better ingredients...

Wow, sorry, I had no intention of being this negative, but hey, I just kind of follow where the facts led me. Maybe this stuff really is amazing.... I need to go back and see if the pint lids are see through like I'm seeing on social media. That's pretty fun!
So, anyone out there had these? I'm always happy to take one (scoop) for the team, but I thought this might be a good moment to get your thoughts first.
i spend equal amounts of time in Texas (Dallas area) and Florida (greater fort lauderdale area) and have never seen nor heard of this brand.
ReplyDeleteI've been walking by these pints for months now, but I was at the store on Friday and they were all gone as were the new Life is Good pints. I may have waited too long to try them.
DeleteMy taste buds mustve changed or something but nowadays if I see any ice cream that uses seed oils they just taste like dog poop (Especially ben and jerrys..I tried their sundae and it was horrible). Like the only ice cream that I think is actually good is van leeuwen, but they feel a bit airy? Still tastes great tho.
ReplyDeleteI think its hilarious when your advertising "Now made with better ingredients".
ReplyDeleteLike, sorry we tried to sell you dogdoo, its better now, we swear"
