[New for Early 2025] So I actually bought these several weeks ago, but then the new ice creams started rolling in and this review got pushed down the list.

Hershey's Cookies 'n' Creme Cake Bites
Hershey's Chocolate Caramel Brownie Bites
Hershey's Chocolate Cake Bites

I try to take my first bite and it's way harder to do than expected. I did not except the bars to be this dense.
If you've ever frozen a Tastykake chocolate cupcake, then you will be familiar with the texture of these bars (with the bars being more dense than the frozen Tastykake). Also, I expected (hoped for) more of a C&C vibe on this one.

I decide to try caramel next and it's funny to see them all nice and neat after the C&C crumbs went everywhere. It was a very similar experience, but now there is a caramel edge to the treat, though the chocolate still dominates the flavor.
It's certainly a fun treat. You get presented with six bars, think about how many you want, and then dive in to something that has the vibes of a frozen candy bar. I would prefer that they be less dense, but I'm not going to say that these aren't fun.

It's been at least a few weeks since I first tried there and now I'm finally trying the last flavor. Big surprise, it's tasty and reminds me of the other two. I'm still stuck on flashbacks of eating frozen tastykakes [for context, Tastykakes used to be super fresh and not have a great shelf life, so when we would come back from Pennsylvania or Jersey, we would stock up and throw a few of the boxes in the freezer so that we could enjoy them for weeks instead of just a week or two].
Anyway, I've got no complaints on these. They might feel a bit small in your hand, but like I said, they are very dense, so I don't think it should be a big deal. Just eat two if you want and go on your way. Maybe they coating could be a smidge thicker to give it a bit more of a candy bar vibe, but these are fine how they are.
On Second Scoop: I'll be slowly snacking on these for the next several weeks (or until mowing season kicks in and I polish them off as a mowing snack). I should probably try to hash out the difference between cake and brownie, but the difference is probably small.
Verdict? solid treat

caramel has the biggest stats and C&C the smallest, but all three are very similar
I am SO glad you posted this. So my kids and I just finished two boxes of the Cookies n' cream variety. First, I can read serving sizes. Based upon the picture on the front of the box, we all expected these to be larger. We were surprised at how small they are. But you are right. They are dense....and chewy to me. I kind of expected thawing directions, but they say eat from frozen. The cookies n' cream was fine, but it tasted like a chocolate brownie to me....reminds me of the chunks they toss into the DQ blizzards that have cake pieces inside (think red velvet or confetti cake). What gets me is the price. I paid 6.99 a box for these. I just think that is high for what I received. It's definitely not a replacement for my ice cream hankering....nor would I really eat it side by side with ice cream. They also reminded me of a cake pop. Like all the cake squished together into a square. Would I personally buy again? No. I'll save my money for something better like an Oreo roll cake or something else. Since I mentioned DQ, I'll add that I can't wait to try the summer line up. The smores is just nostalgia for me. And the new mashup one opens up a door for more mash ups. I like this because when I add things to my blizzard, it always costs $$$. This does the same thing for me for the same price.
ReplyDeleteHey! I know this is from a much older and unrelated post, but I just wanted to chime in real quick about Giant/Stop & Shop's Deluxe ice cream pints. I'm convinced you just got a bum batch... I was hesitant after reading your not-complimentary post but decided to try one out on sale—the Coffee Fudge Toffee. It's the smoothest, densest non-custard base ice cream I've had (not to mention a store brand) with great flavor (I happen to like coffee), and the fudge swirls were awesome. I hit one motherload chunk, and it was Graeter's tier rich. I'm bummed your store didn't handle them better and hope you can get them at their typical quality and give them another shot... real sleeper hit!
ReplyDeleteyeah, I never did go back for fresh pints, but I can put it on the to-do list once the new ice cream season settles down. (https://www.onsecondscoop.com/2024/05/deluxe-ice-cream.html if anyone is curious)
